Help needed snake in house

Need more Corns
Hello

Just been told by my Mother that here friends daughter has a corn snake(suspected snow) in her house. She said that she was sat on the sofa and seen it curled up on the rug and when she moved, as she was scared, the corn went under the fire and out of sight. They called the RSPCA and as they couldn't see it, they couldn't help her out. That was thursday (8 April) and then on monday (12 April) they had been away for the weekend and on coming home found urates/poo in the upstairs bedroom. My mother has said to contact me and i will go up to there house and have a look around etc.

Now what to do. I was thinking of making some traps out of cola bottles and placing a pinkie in the end to see if i can catch it. I was also going to put some hides down in various locations - boxes, cave hides etc and see if the snake ends up in them. I don't have any spare heat mats at the minute, as i was thinking of put one of them down with a hide on top, but will probably just do it without the heat mat. I also might put down some flour around wall edges, under the fire, upstairs bedroom, to see were the snake moves about. Although this might not work, as if it was in the middle of the room on the rug, then chances are it might not travel around the edge of the room.

Do any of you helpful people have any suggestions as to how i could capture this snake, i really want to avoid glue traps, tape traps, as it could be a few days before i could go back if it got stuck. Any suggestions would be great as she is freaking out at the minute.

If anybody knows if there are any posts, websites that show how to make a bottle trap, then that would be great.

One final thing. They said it was long and fat, so looks like it has been feeding and thereofre traps would have to be able to contain adults.

Thanks in advance if people can help
Anthony

You have a lot of sound ideas. The one thing I might do differently is the mouse in the trap. If it's too cool for digestion and you won't be back for a few days, it might be a nasty rotten mouse before you get back. On the other hand, an adult ought to be able to digest a pink even at lower-than optimum temperatures.

You might try to get some soiled bedding from prey animals like mice, hamsters, gerbils, or even birds. This material could be used to scent your traps without worry of decay or digestive issues. You could likely get some bedding from a pet store if you don't have any of these animals yourself.

Good luck catching the snake. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the reply Caryl,

I did think of that problem with the mouse and i thought i would use the bottle traps after everythng else, mainly as i won't be able to go there everyday. I like the suggestion of using the mice, hamster bedding in the bottle instead of the pinkie, don't want to catch the snake and then it possibly die because the mouse had gone bad.

I am going to go to her house next week sometime and have a major look around to see if i can see it. Then if no luck i will put some flour along walls and put some hides down in various rooms and see if we see any action.

Hopefully we will catch it and i will have a new snake :)

If you can't go there soon, you can you maybe tell her to already put some flower here and there. You might get an idea where you could start looking around.

Not to be too obvious about it but flues only go one way - up - did anyone think to take the fire out and see if the snake was curled up behind it before they switched anything on... else a cooked snake :(

You could try a manual search - although even the big ones can make themselves very scarce - and it seems that its been eating very well for a wild one so have you asked around for an escapee in the area?

probably the best bet is a trap - I'd suggest a 2 litre food storage box with a hole cut in one end to let him/her in with some food and something to curl up with - if you have a heat mat spare put that under it - a warm snake all curled up is less likely to want to move - specially if you put a towel over so its dark - both of my adults seem to love the cheap £1 3 stack boxes you get at poundland - either the biggest or the middle one depending on the size you think it is and if its anything like my snow it'll be perfectly happy to spend the next week curled up in there..

good luck with catching it :)

Hi Jemma,

The fire is a gas one and therefore the RSPCA man said that she would have to get a gas man out to take the fire out or hope that it comes out by itself. They haven't had the fire on and therefore the snake hasn't cooked lol. Like the box idea and as i have ordered a few heats this week(getting a ghost in a few weeks) i mite just do what you suggested and will put a hide in there also. Should be going down in the next few days, so will hopefully have some luck.
