HELP !TANK IS 75 DEGREES IN DAYTIME!!!

so its summer time and right now it is 6 30 pm and in Maryland its atleast 90degrees outside. I came home today to find that my corn's enclosure was 75 on the warm side and 71 on the cold side:(!!! its the lowest its ever been and i don't know why. I always cover the AC vents in my room cause i have no need for AC if I have low iron. This happens during the weekdays but on the weekends when i'm at home in my room ( where the corn is) its at 86! I have 2 thermometers at each side of the tank on the substrate and a 60 blue zoomed daybulb and a UTH for my 10 gallon tank. For the time being I put a blanket around the back side of and the 2 sides of the tank.

Is there any way or anything I can add to the tank to help warm up my tank?

I'm a little slightly confused but...

do you have an appropriately sized UTH with a thermostat for the cornsnake? My UTH seems to do the job no matter what temperature my house is at.

if you are using a rheostat...those are designed to not hold a steady temperature...but rather to keep the temperature a certain number degrees warmer than the air temperature (or something to that effect). So if you have temperature fluctuations in the house, a rheostat might not be the best.

Did your UTH fail? They do, regularly! Which is why it's so important to have a digital thermometer you can always read.

I blew all but 100 on my tank and school tution, so I couldn't get the rheostat or the thermostat. My UTH is takes up 1/3 ( maybe a little more) of the bottom floor of the tank. It said it was designed for 10 gallon tanks. My viv looks like this...

The blanket isn't in these pics but i put it on the a few mins ago and the temp went up to 78.

Does your UTH feel warm at all? If it doesn't it may have failed like Nanci suggested which means you need a new one:(, but you can buy a UTH/rheostat combo for like $20.

I see you have stick on thermometers, but do you have any probe thermometers stuck to the bottom of the tank directly above the UTH. The stick on thermometers only measure the ambient air temp which is virtually useless for cornsnake purposes. A thermometer with a probe attatched directly to the bottom above the UTH will give a more accurate reading of belly heat, which is what corns need most for digestion.

So should i buy the rheostat and a thermometer with a probe? I have a gold and silver thermometer at the top of the tank and the 2 liquid ( black) thermometers at the bottom of the tank on each side. the very bottom of these thermometers are covered a little bit with substrate.

Liquid like mercury thermometers? I would take those out unless your into biohazards, lol and yes get a rheostat until you can afford a good thermostat. If your ambient temps are 75-78 then your bottom temps are sure to be at least 80-85, but do a rheostat to avoid overheating.

Yeah, I'd get a thermostat or rheostat and a thermometer with probe asap. Chances are your UTH could be burning quite hot, and you just don't know it because you don't know the temperature directly on the glass.

Without a thermostat the UTH's can get 100+ degrees and cause contact burns and overheating.

ok so i'm going to rush to the nearest petsmart in Maryland ( they close at 9). and buy a rheostat and a thermometer with a probe. I think I'll try to leave the one on the cool side in. and just get one for the hot side. should I also leave the light on and just dim it down since the rheostat and the UTH will heat it up enough?

That'll work. :)

As far as the thermometers, just be sure the packaging says it has a probe. If you can't find one at the petstore I got mine at wal mart (in the hardware section by the thermometers, they sell indoor/outdoor ones that have a probe to measure outdoor temps). I can't remember how much it was, but around $13 I'd guess.
