Help w/escaped corn!

I searched the forum for advice on other escaped pets & found some. But I still have some questions.

We keep our snake in our home office - carpeted - lots of computers & printers. On the other side of the office is ceranmic tile (cold). The outdoor temp is around 50.

Would a snake go across a cold tile floor? The door to our basement is open but it is chilly there. Would a corn snake still go to an area that is cold? Would a corn snake travel upstairs where it's warm?

I searched the office the best I could & wondering where to start next.

Our snake is a young male - around 3 months old, I think. We got him from someone who had to get rid of him. He does like to curl up at the top of the tank.

Any advice is appreciated!
Thank you!

Usually they will go to heat sources but they could go anywhere. The first thing they do is usually to go around the perimeter of the room they escaped in, looking for small crevices/holes/under doors. Check in any small hole, heaters, under couches/cushions.

2 things you should do:

Leave a warm mouse out on a heatpad, in more than one place. You may want to put some type of small hide on the heatpad as well. At doorways put string out or some kind of powder, so you can track their movement. Your snake will probably hide somewhere, then go prowl at night.

You may want to check inside of some of those computers and printers. It may seek out the warmth in them.

You should start setting up little traps. A good one is a tape trap. Use masking or painters tape and put it on the floor, along walls, edges, corners. Sticky side up. If the little comes across the tape, it will get stuck. Just make sure you don't use duct tape or glue traps. Those could injure your snake.

You can also make bottle traps. Take a 2 litter soda bottle. Cut the top off, at the top of the label and turn it in on it self, so that the mouth is facing in. Place a feeder inside and hopefully the snake will seek it out.

Don't give up, I have heard of snakes turning up, when you least expect it.

Good Luck!

Wayne

I think Wayne may be on to something with the computers and printers suggestion :) I say this because last year, I had an adult female get out of a tank one night, that had not been closed properly, just after feeding, but the next morning after a thorough search, we found her curled up in a little crevice inside the printer!!!

So searching all dark warm places would be my suggestion to start with and the flour round the baseboards and doorways is a good one, as that's how we pin pointed our girl to the computer desk :)

Good luck in your search, I hope he turns up safe and sound for you :)

I'm sorry to hear you've got one on the lam. If the snake's viv is in the room with the computers and printers I'd almost bet that he's in one of those. Chances are he'll come out at night, so you might be able to locate him with a flashlight search. The flashlight has the dual benefit of being less likely to frighten a prowling snake back into immediate hiding, and focusing your eyes on the search extremely well.

The warm mouse is a good idea, as are the traps made from masking/painter's tape. Do NOT use Duct tape or a commercial tape trap. Those can be lethal.

If you put his viv on its side by a wall he may go in and just stay there, particularly if his favorite hide is easily accessible after a nice mousy snack. Be sure to put fresh water out, as well.

I hope he turns up safe, and soon.
