Hey all

Drummer/Snake lover
How's everyone doing? I'm mike, just got my first corn snake about a month ago, named her layla. I've needed advice for awhile now and i stumbled upon this site and im glad i did, you've already answered most of my questions but im sure there will be more to come.

Welcome to the site and congrats on your new snake! Everyone here is always more than happy to answer questions and we absolutely love pics so post as many as you want!!

again, welcome!! :)

Welcome! You came to the right place for getting support on keeping corn snakes. People are REALLY knowledgeable here. We even have corn snake book writers among us. :)

I actually just thought of a question. My viv has a UTH and a heating lamp. My UTH is on the side of the tank because the desk i have it on, im afraid if i put it under the tank it will heat up too hot and start a fire or burn the desk. Should i get rid of that UTH and get a new one and put it under the tank or should i just leave it the way it is for now until i need to get a new tank? The temp on the warm side stays between 80-85 during the day and drop to about 77-83 at night. My thermometers are all down by the snake bedding.

You UTH is not enough to burn wood and start a fire (I REALLY HOPE NOT).
Corns don't need a heat lamp. Move the UTH to the bottom of the tank, controlled by a rheostat or, preferably, a thermostat.
Measure the temperature (with a probe thermometer) as close to the UTH as possible where the snake have access (the bottom glass, underneath the bedding).

Great advice here... just adding one tidbit. Make sure you have small spacers under the tank so that there is room for air to circulate under the tank (after you move the UTH to the bottom). This will prevent heat build up and you'll get better temperatures (voice of experience here) and the heat will be less likely to discolor the surface of the desk. You can buy little "rubber feet" for your tank at local discount stores (I bought mine at Wal-Mart).

BTW... WELCOME to the forum & CONGRATS on your new snake! Would love to see pics!!!

That's a good idea, ill get some "rubber feet" from Wal-Mart. And i'm suprised i didnt think of that I work there, and i should've gotten something by now to vent the UTH. Thanks for the advice, and ill get some pics up when i take her out tomorrow.

Welcome to the forum!

I'm actually really paranoid about fire so what I do with my tanks is I go to WalMart and buy those plastic feet that you put on chair legs to keep them from scraping and use them to perch my tanks/tubs on and then under that, I use reflectix. It's best to use a thermostat with this though, because it will reflect the heat upwards. It makes me feel less paranoid about it heating the table underneath the tanks/tubs.

As said before, Welcome to the forum!

Feel free to ask any questions that you have. People here will answer all the questions you have. This is by far the nicest forum i've ever been to.

Good Luck with your snake and dont get too many :p

p.s. We love pictures!
