Near-Future Breeder
Been wandering these forums for a week or so. Definitely enjoying the wealth of information and resources :)

Anyway, my name is Fadere (Fade for short if you wish). I've been a herp enthusiast for 5+ years. Had a numerous amount of iguanas and other lizards growing up (mom was somewhat of an irresponsible herper...I guess you could say). I've had snakes (ball pythons specifically) in the past and hope to regrow my collection.

I currently have 0.1 Normal Ball Python my girlfriend and I bought from Petco (shhhh....she was calling to us...I used to work for Petco...trust me, I know people there don't know a DAMN THING!) lol.

I've been interested in corn snakes for some time now, haven't had the opportunity to own one myself yet...but that day is coming closer and closer. (Portland and Puyallup expos coming up! yayyyy!! Aug. 22nd and Oct. 18-19th I believe)

I've been incredibly interested in genetics since I was a child. I grew up on Monster Rancher, Digimon, and Pokemon... Always found genotype/phenotype interesting as well as the idea of mixed traits.

I've been studying morph traits for the past 4-6 months in ball pythons and for the last 2-3 in corn snakes. I've decided that I want to start with a simple rack consisting of 2.5 (won't be breeding all, will actually have the 2nd male and probably 2 females as backups in case something were to happen with the ones originally planned to breed...like lack of the willingness to breed). Hopefully I'll be fully prepared to start breeding by next season. :spinner:

Well, hope to hear from you all soon and see you in the forums/expos :)

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Sounds like you know what you want. Good to go into it as informed as you are and if you have any questions chances are that you will find the answers on this forum. What do you want to start out breeding? Have you checked with the vendors at the expo to make sure you will be able to get what you want there? Like Leonore said I will be looking out for your updates.

thanks for the support. I haven't had a chance to check out the vendors yet, been somewhat busy with work and running tons of errands lol. I will be taking a look to see what they'll be bringing and hopefully have something up and running shortly. I've already started gathering supplies for the mice colonies, starting off small with 1 breeder bin, 2 adolescent bins (1 male, 1 female) and 1 back up bin. all that's left for them is the bedding, mesh, and food, then I'll be getting the mice themselves ^^

luckily there was a pet store nearby with supplies for 50% off, got a ton of water bottles, run wheels, etc. for cheap lol.

Welcome to the forum and when you get your pairs of corns welcome to the madness! lol Great to have ya!

Freddie, welcome to the forums.
I was at a reptile show/sale awhile back, where there were also invertebrae dealers and one fellow had an amazing variety of rodents of numerous colors, patterns, some of them hairless, many morph rodents...I asked why he had all of these weird rodents, and he said
He used them to study genetics, for breeding projects, as he could easily run through several generations in a year's time, and by doing so, he could then grasp a better idea of future reptile breeding projects. And, that, as long as he was keeping and breeding interesting reptiles, he felt he might as well produce interesting food items for them. If you've never seen a hair-less calico guinea pig, it's a bit un-nerving at first glance, but, personally, I'd feel good about letting that hairless guinea pig befriend a python. Probably get PETA on my case for that last remark. Warm Regards

petco reply

hello im new to the forums but have been getting alot of info for a couple months now and i was reading your post about working at petco,my wife and i live in W.A state there are 4 Petco stores within a 100 mile square, anyways they just opend a new store in Poulsbo wich my wife and i just learnd about and decided to have a look to see what color patterns they had for corns, right away i noticed they had 2 blizzards and they had mites they also had some normal and acouple amels too,so i went to the ladie who was spraying some of the tanks and told her about it and she told me that her manager new about it and there was also a redtail boa who was really thin and not eating, yet it was in the tank with 4 others instead of quarantined it looked pretty well off...all i can say is ive been lucky with my 2 corns and have had them checked by a vet but i for 1 will never buy another snake from petco again even if there cheaper, its worth the money to buy from a breeder..

peace out herpers

yeah, I know what you mean. the manager that I was hired under when I worked there was fired for the amount of animals in quarantine and that had to be seen by the vet. they said he wasn't taking good enough care of the animals (bs). the next manager who took his place completely screwed me over and didn't give 2 damns for the animals. imo they don't care about the animals, it is a corporation afterall. anyone that does everything they are SUPPOSED TO DO will be punished.

....on a side note, I saved another BP from petco....don't hurt me >.<

and it's not that they're cheaper, I know that you can get normals from reputable breeders or even CH at 10 bucks a pop from the right, respectable people that are in much better condition than those at chain petstores.

the reason I got this new one....it spoke to me...it called my name....it was saying "help meeeeee....helllllp meeeeeeeeeee!" lol.

these snakes are much better off in my care than in the hands of an unknowing, spur of the moment "pet lover" or even the hands of a "trained professional" like the petco employees. hell, I still notice everytime I go to one that the corns are always under the waterdish and they never have any hides and the employees constantly complain about how customers never get to see them...

oh, and lastly, when I did get this second BP (Slim) the manager (or atleast A manager) was telling me about how there was an angry BP in there somewhere because they found it in the morning roaming around the opposite end of the store...w...t...f...? and the woman was terrified of snakes...she used a snake hook to get the ball pythons out for me until I told her I used to work at petco and I have no problem getting them out of the tank.

ugh...-end rant- lol
