I am new but I am not what you would call a "newbie". I plan on buying a snake very soon actually and I am very excited. I think I am going with an amel since they are so cheap ($15) but I might check out the blizzards at a local reptile show first.

I was at petco the other day and I seen they had a new snake starter kit which actually might have some value to it (besides the thermometer of course) for only 50 bucks. It came with two lights, rheostat, 5 gal., stick on thermometer, aspen, and a few hides. I might go with that or just use the spare 10 gal. I have.

You'd be better off spending the $50 on an under tank heater (UTH) and thermostat for your ten gallon. The five gallon won't fit the snake long enough to be worth buying. Plus, the snake doesn't need lights of any type. Eventually you will need to buy a 20L or larger viv for the snake as a permanent adult home. Of course, if you had the money, you could just go with that from the beginning. The most important thing about whatever viv you set him up in is that it is absolutely for sure escape-proof. There is a type of glass tank called a Zilla Critter Cage (not the plastic Kritter Keeper) and has a sliding locking screen cover. I would recommend that. They come in many sizes.

If I were you, I'd go to the show and buy a snake there. That way you can meet the breeder, find out what kind of guarantee they have and know for sure what the snake has been eating and how often. I get the feeling that many Petco/Petsmart snakes are not started off well before they are whole-saled to the shop, so you just don't have the best chance for success.

Escape proof is definatly my main concern! lol My family would flip if they stumbled upon a snake in the house. I would never buy any animal from petco aside from crested geckos because I don't agree with the way they keep them. I once seen them trying to feed crickets to hatchlings. >.<

There are plenty of breeders around me here in MI that have hatchlings for 15 bucks. I was just trying to figure out how much I could get a blizzard for at the local reptile show here.

I have a 29 gallon right now with nothing in it but I figured it would be too big for a young corn snake.

Hi Shank and welcome to the forum. You have already been given great advice. I would definately go to the show. You will get to see beautiful morphs you never knew existed. Remember, these snakes can live 20 years. Take the time and get something you want, not just what's cheap. Also, I would use the 29 gallon, just put tons of hides of different types and he will be fine. Good luck and keep us posted. After you get your snake, post some pics. We love that! :)

alright then that sounds like a good idea.. You have a really good point! I will go to the reptile show to go on my shopping spree. Knowing me I probably would want another one in a year that is a kooler lookin morph. They seem to be very addicting so I probably will anyways. :dunce:

Thanks a lot for the advice on the bigger tank now I can do some extra decorating which is always fun.

We just bought my son a 3yr. old Hypo at a reptile show and they dad the Zilla Critter Cages there. We paid $45 for a 20 gal tank with the locking lid. We now have 2 of these types of cages and they are great. You should be able to get alot of good accessories, at the show, and they will be alot cheaper then a chain pet store.
Our SuperPet store has an all in one set up, w/ 20 gallon tank for $120.
I bought my son's snake, critter cage, bedding, water dish and hide and only spent $100

thats not bad at all.. looks like i will have to wait until the second saturday of november then. thank you all for the input

Just another note. Plan ahead and before you go to the show, have your tank completely set up: substrate (most use aspen), hides, water dish, top with clips if you go that route, thermometer with probe, uth and rheostat. Give it a couple days before the show to make sure the temp is right and the uth is not too hot. Then, you can go to the show and buy your snake knowing you already have it's home ready and going. It's not good to try to set up everything after bringing home snake. Have fun.
