hi everyone....ive just bought my first corn snake today for my kids...havent really even thought about getting one before but im so taken by it already he is beautiful. i am a little nervous handling him at the moment though he is so tiny im scared of hurting him!....The only thing i noticed was that when i had been handling him for a while my arm started to itch a bit where he was slithering up my arm, is it possible to be allergic to them?...i have no rash and the itching has settled down now, was just wondering if anyone else has had an experience of this?

Hi, and welcome to the forums! Hope you enjoy owning the snake :D

Do you have any idea what morph (Colour) it is? If not, if you post some pics we will all be able to help :) You should love these forums, they are really friendly, and if you ever need help you can get it in minutes.

As for your alergy question, I don't know. It is probably fairly normal, but not having got my snake yet I wouldn't know. Would wait for some more experienced keepers ;)

thanks for the warm welcome, im not sure what type my corn is, he is a red, white and black sort of colour. i will post some pics on here in the next few days so hopefully someone will be able to tell me what one i have. As you can probably tell i have no experience of snakes at all and have only been looking at the information sites for about a week now as it was a quick decision to get one! i didnt realise how fast they can be, but am kind of hoping he will slow down a bit as he gets bigger, he is about 10inches long at the moment.

Well, if you get some pics up you will know probably within 5 minutes what he/she is likely to be :) In the meantime, if you take a look around the forums and ask a few questions, you will find that you will know about 10 times more than you did when you came in a few hours. I joined a couple of days ago, and all the research I have done paled in comparison with that first hour lol.

Hi hannah, i'm new to keeping a snake also but this forum is excellent and the people are really helpful. If you can buy the corn snake manual by kathy love, it has everything you need to know. Oh and good luck with your snake

if you just got your snake today give it about 4 days to settle in to its new surroundings. its probably as nervous as you are right now. :)

hey thanx everyone, i will look out for that book cheers. it seems to be settling in quite well already, but i still think im more nervous than he is! nerves aside though i can easily see how snakes become part of peoples families i am falling in love with him already!

Welcome to the forum!
It is possible to be allergic to snake skins that an animal has shed. But I've never heard of anyone being allergic to the skin while it's still on the animal. :grin01:
Good luck with your new snake! I got my new snake yesterday, so I know exactly how you feel.

oh no my poor little snake has got mites....well i got him out today and there was these tiny black things crawling on him, i panicked and called the place where i bought him from (i only got him on thursday too) and i have to take him back tomorrow to be treated. i dont really know what these things do to him or if they are hurting him but its very distressing, i feel like the worst mummy in the world! ....... on a better note can someone please tell me how to put pics on here as i have a few of him i want to upload. cheers.

just worked out how to upload images but it is saying my images are too big to upload...they were taken on my digital camera and saved on to the pc so i dont know how to make them any smaller!....HELP!!

Go to http://www.download.com/ and download a copy of the software program IrfanView. You can use it to resize images so they're less than 600k, or resave images that may be corrupted. Once you have downloaded and installed IrfanView, simply run the program, open your .gif, or .jpg image, and resave it as another version (example: in IrfanView, open file named pic01.jpg, and resave it as pic01b.jpg).
That should resize them for you. Welcome to the forum. I'm sure you'll find a lot of info here.

Hi everyone new here...

Hi everyone, last week me and my boyfriend bought our first corn snake. We noticed he is very active when we get him out. Our temps are about 84 during the day and at night we have them down to about 74...when we got him tuesday they had just fed him a pinkie but you could not see a bump in him or anything... should we be feeding him more? we are supposed to feed him tomorrow so i am hoping all goes well... i know this is going to sound odd but how will i know when he poops or pees.. cause as of now i really havent seen anything but the bedding in there.. and i want to make sure everything is going ok with him! i am going to attach some pictures of him (not quite sure if it is a female or male) and hopefully everything will go good!

Welcome Hannah! You will need to throw away his bedding before you put him back...and disinfect his home! Mites are not mummy's fault! Kathy Love's book is great and you should get one. Her site is http://www.corn-utopia.com/ you will find her very helpful. They do need a few days to settle in before you handle him too much. As for feeding...how often are you planning on feeding him? Every 5 to 7 days is fine and a pinky right now is fine too. Feel free to ask us or anyone here any questions you may have. This is a great place to be for all your corn needs and fun!!
