I found this site as I was looking up more info on my corns. I've had snakes on and off for about 9 years now, but milky (was china)- is now my main beau.
and Ive got some questions about her feeding reactions. shes a Sweet snake, and enjoys being held... (I think) but as soon as I bring a mouse into the house, (fresh brained at the pet store for me) she starts striking at everything, and sometimes shes still in her hide when she starts.
I only feed her after she defecates the last of her meal. usually every 5 or 6 days, depending on the size of her meal. its not a set feeding, and at times, the time can be Vary random. I dont feed her in her cage cause the bedding gets in the fur and in her mouth, so its usually in a feed box, but its gotten so bad as I am starting to use gloves to fish her out of her cage when I am ready to feed her. otherwise shes a vary slow and friendly snake.
can anyone tell me why she acts like this? she cant have smelled the bagged mouse That fast.. can she?

She's a good feeder! I'd put her in her feeding tub first, then go get the mouse at the store. What size is she and what size mice are you feeding? Is possible she needs larger mice to sate her appetite?

On a side note, I lived in Anchorage a long time ago!

thanks

shes alittle under 3 feet about 2 feet 8 inches, and alittle underweight, I only just managed to get a long term job, and only just feeding her more mice more often, (about six months now) shes 162 grams. and might be moving up in scale on the med adult mice, size around as her middle, she ate two day ago and the lump is already gone. though shes vary active, and has good body tone. though, I doubt having a bigger mouse would help, I bought two mice to start breeding, and she hasent stopped striking sense they got into the house, that was RIGHT after I Fed her. shes gone on Ultra hunt mode and hasent stopped zooming around her tank, and she hasent even defecated yet. is it good to wait until shes got one meal digested at least alittle before I feed her? I heard it was alittle bad to feed them to many times in a week.. is that true?

If you are feeding her every five days I'd say that's about perfect. She don't look underweight to me from your picture, but, pictures can be misleading. If she is underweight, keep feeding her every 5 days, if she's really not, you can probably feed her just once a week. Feeding her prey items as big around as she is, is also good, but be aware that they can easily eat mice up to one-a-half times as big as the widest part of the snake. Never give them a meal bigger than this. You may also consider feeding her multiple smaller mice as well. As far as her aggressive response to smelling mice, I don't know. I have a large Amel that is the same way. He is my largest, calmest and most friendly snake I have, but, when he smells his meal, be careful, because he's on his way! Maybe a snake hook to transfer her to her feeding bin would be helpful. She's an awesome looking snake by the way. A snow? Hope this helps, Mitch.

ty.

oh I forgot to ask you, in my last post, why you left alaska, Dion.
well I couldent get an exact measurement of her body, I do know shes Not quite 3 feet, a few inches short, but she Is 162 grams, (has a vary accurate scale, useto be Vary into falconry)
I plan on feeding her every 5 days, after her last defication, at least, as long as she's willing to eat, and im not hurting her.
I dont know, I dont like tools, if I cant handle her with my own two hands, then I am doing something wrong, and shouldent be having snakes. (though I am happy to say, she has NEVER bitten me, it still scares the chit out of me and I have to hold my breath when I hear that Cccctttt as she strikes)
and yes, thanks shes a Blizzard, my Mentor (Don Soderberg) picks out the best snakes for me every time I order from him. I have 3 more babies, another Wonderful blizzard, a Beautiful bloodred and a Okeetee, extreme. The last I have to say, is making me sweat, she isnt eating, and Ive tried just about everything, pinkies frozen, pinkies fresh, pinkies fresh killed. im going to try the Chicken broth next. though its only been a week and a half. im still worried.

We left because my mother hated it and as kids, we didn't have a choice! I loved it. I've only been back once as an adult, for Fur Rondy, and really enjoyed myself. I've got to take my husband there some day.

lol nice

yea I dont go to the rondy much anymore, crowded, cold, and I have work now. (always) I do like the junkfood, and the fur auction. but I dont use much furs anymore anyway.
I like this site, or I thought I did.. the chat room leaves a bit of a aftertaste though. alaska has little to no breeding population of Serious snake keepers, most that Ive gotten from alaska petshops, or pet breeders end up sick, or dieing within a year of me getting them, but when I said that, everyone thought I was talking about THEIR snakes.
noone really payed attention that I was Saying OUTSIDE poplulation of snakes are SO much better. no, they just mobbed me and were getting offeneded by "Those" remarks. they didnt even take a moment to Really Relize what I was trying to say.
kinda makes me wonder what I got myself into by joining here.

You'll find most people on here are very friendly, encouraging and helpful. Chat has caused problems in the past, there was a major rift several years ago over something that happened in chat. I've never used a chat room. I hope you'll stick around and see that this is a great place.

You said that someone should get snakes from Don because they were the only healthy snakes you'd gotten, and that snakes you'd gotten from any other breeder or pet store died because they were "sickly." Nothing about "Alaska-based" breeders, like you're saying now. Chat has several breeders that are in every night, and when you say Don is the only person with healthy snakes, I find it rude to say in front those breeders, as well as rude to all of the other reputable breeders on this site. I was not mobbing you, I was just wondering how you could say Don has the only healthy snakes.

Either way, this site is a fantastic resource for all of your corn questions, welcome to the site.

I dont Go out buying Hundreds of snakes a year, I get one, maybe two, every FEW years, If I had come to this site a few years ago, I may have found other Breeders to get my snakes from. but as it is, Don is the only one Ive ever gotten snakes from, and I Didnt say He is The only one Who has Healthy snakes, I said beyond alaska breeders, hes the only one that Ive found who has upheld his end, on the health and quality of snakes BECAUSE hes the only one Ive ever ordered from. im SORRY if I offend you, in ANYWAY. get off my back, please. thankyou for the twisted welcome, and I think your right Diony, I am not going back to chat, Ill stick to the messages.

I'm not on your back, it's unfortunate you feel that way. It's not a twisted welcome, this site has so much to offer, that I'm happy anyone with a corn comes here.

thats not how it looked to me earlyer, nor in the chat room. you may see it as innocent, and Im sorry I dont see the same point of view as you do, but I am my own person, and Im sorry I got defensive, but after that barb in the chat, and the fact that noone was listening when I tried to explain was slightly annoying. I Know this site has a lot to offer, I also knew I should have stayed away from the chat. my fault for going there. I wont do it again.
