Hide and viv ideas

Hi all,

I am quite new here, but I wanted to share a lovely idea my daughter and I had to provide hides for our new and truly adored corn.

My grandfather, as an older man, decided to try his hand at the pottery wheel. When he passed, I took all the pieces to our house - I love hand thrown pottery, and none of the rest of the family wanted them. They aren't really something you would use; they are... shall we say, rustic? I have tried the pottery wheel myself - it's really hard!

Anyways, I took two of the smaller cups he made, and put them one on each side of the viv. Glory (the snake) can curl up in them, and the in the slightly deeper one she can get right out of sight. Because they are glazed ceramic, the one on the warmer side gets a little warmer, you know? Of course, she is still small, but they will provide decor even once she needs a bigger hide.

The reason I wanted to share this idea with you is that I have long been using our tanks, for fish, a turtle and some crabs, to display animal safe doo-dads with sentimental value that I don't particularly want to dust and just have lying around, but want to keep. So they become tank decor, but in this case, these "heirlooms" are actually perfectly functional as well! And I get to see Grandpa's pottery every day.

I was thinking that if you had, say, a favourite mug that the handle broke off of, instead of yet another pen holder, you could file down the sharper edges and give it to your snake!

Our goldfish swim in and out of my daughter's favourite mug that broke in half.

Just a thought - anyone else do things like this?

I don't do it now...but you've definitely given me something to think on and experiment with.

Thanks for the great ideas :D

Thanks for sharing your story. I really enjoyed it. Using those heirlooms is a great way to keep certain memories alive.

I don't decorate my vivs with anything unusual. I use the standard stuff - plastic hides, cardboard boxes, plastic plants, ceramic rock structures, and branches.

Neat idea. I have quite a few pieces of pottery I've thrown myself, but none of them are big enough for my snakes to hide in.
