Hide too big?

Heya everyone, my little guy's getting to be, well, pretty darn big. My question is about hide size. He has outgrown his current one (when curled up he is about the same size as the inside of it) so I want to replace it. The next size up of the type of hide I like to use (it looks nice, is cheap, and is easy to clean) is huge... It's probably 2.5x as large at the base and twice as large vertically. Is this too big? I've heard the rule of thumb is that the hide should be 1.5 times the size of the snake when curled up, but at the same time he's a year and a half old so I figure he wouldn't feel as vulnerable as a younger snake would. So, should I put it in now and let him grow into it or figure something else out and then use this hide when he's full grown? Thanks for any advice.

Put in in with him, leave the old hide in and see which he prefers at the moment.

You could also use a temporary interim hide made out of an old box, while he's growing. They don't have to be anything flashy as long as your guy feels safe inside.

They like to feel secure, so the more of the walls of the hide they can touch while curled up the better.

I would have to agree with bitsy, as some snakes are more secure by nature and don't mind using a larger hide and others are more insecure and prefer a snug hide. So by giving him both and seeing which one he uses the most you will know how he feels and can go with it, knowing you are not stressing your snake out.
