Housing question

There is a gorgeous adult corn I want to rescue, but I can only afford the snake at the moment. It was recommended to me that big clear plastic bins from walmart would be an excellent solution for a temporary set up until I can purchase a proper tank. Is this a good idea? I know that many breeders do this but they use racks, something I don't have. The lid that comes with the plastic bins seems a little flimsy and I don't know what solutions I have in that department.
I'm at a loss. I can't stop thinking about that snake and I want to bring it into a good home. Any suggestions?

You will need a heat source and a thermostat, besides the plastic tub. Generally, the snake is the cheapest part of a snake set up. And yes, without a rack, most corns find rubbermaid bins are very easily escaped. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but to be able to rescue, it is paramount to have an escape-proof enclosure with the proper temperature gradient.

I have a heating pad, hides, water bowl, etc. That's unfortunate news if there's no way I can successfully use a bin. I'm working on finding a used tank for a lower price.
The poor thing is being kept in a 10 gallon with high humidity and heat, no hide, unclean substrate, and no water at a local pet store. I'm considering filing a complaint with the BBB.

You aren't going to pay for the rescue are you?

Some bins have handles which fold down and lock the top to the bin.
I'd look for one of those.
You can also use a couple of bungee cords for extra security if you feel it's necessary.
I use the same bin for transporting and for feeding.

And if you do rescue the snake, make sure to to "Quarantine" the animal.
I "Rescued" A beautiful female Amel Corn that turned out to have Crypto.

Best of luck.

I wish I didn't have to, I've managed to haggle the already discounted price down a bit by pointing out the poor living conditions. The snake is apparently "mean", which is what they mentioned when I asked to handle him, though the two times I've handled him he's been nothing but calm and sweet. He's probably mean because he feels threatened by the rough handling of the employees, especially when he has no hide and is constantly exposed >:[

And thanks for the suggestion rrowdy about the locking bins and bungee cords!! That's a great idea! And as for quarantining I already planned on keeping him at my boyfriends place well away from my other animals for a while haha. If I get him he's going straight to a vet.

Yes, clear plastic bins can make great enclosures. With the lid secured properly they make good set-ups. I use sterilites with latches on the side. Then I clamp 4 bulldog office clips on, one near each corner. The smaller containers don't need additional clips. You can get these clips in the office section of wal-mart.

I am keeping mine in a plastic Sterilite tub now, with binder clips to hold the lid on securely. Bungee cords, luggage straps, and gluing velcro strips on are also good ways of keep the lid on well. Will probably always use a Sterilite tub, unless my snake gets enormous.

Regarding the "rescue": I'm sure it feels like you're rescuing the snake, but if you have to buy it from a business, you're just supporting that business. They'll take your money for profit and/or get new animals to sell. If you end up buying it, all your haggling won't have mattered, they got what they wanted from you -- $$$$

One would think they'd get more money if they kept animals in better conditions, but then people still go in and buy the ones they've got, so why make the effort. Don't support pet stores that don't keep live animals well. Report them, but don't give them money.

If you want to support a person or group, find a good breeder and give them your money. They care about what they're doing and your purchase rewards their efforts and keeps them going for everyone else.

Thanks so much for the advice Amanda! You're right about supporting businesses like that by "rescuing", it's such a shame that it has to be that way. If I could take home all of those animals I would.
I definitely plan on reporting it, I went today and took picture documentation and plan on writing a report over the next week.
He just won my heart and I can't bear to leave him behind. I'm so torn. Thank you so much for the advice.

I use clips like these, the size you'll need depends on the size of the tote. Also the number required will depend on the size of the tote too. Buy more than you think you'll need, it's better to have to many clips, than to have a lost snake. I'm sure this is a no brainer, but always put them back on, even if your just going to grab the water bowl out and give it a quick rinse and put it back in ;)

There was an article on one of my dog forums called "I consider him a rescue." I wish I could find the link to it, but it's escaping me! Definitely report them, and keep at it. If you choose to still buy, then quarantine, quarantine, QUARANTINE. It sounds like you have that bit planned, which is good, but make sure that he's kept away from Boyfriend's animals if he has any.

As for tubs, I use them as I do use rack systems. My racks are tight enough that they can't squeeze out, but I do have two yearlings stacked on top of the rack (waiting for the other to finish being built), and they're held in place with clips and heavy DND manuals stacked on top (oops, let my nerd show!).

Thanks guys, I never thought of binder clips haha. I'm glad to know that there is a way to do this if I choose to go through with it!

And I play DnD too, so thanks for the suggestion, those manuals are pretty heavy hahahaha >.<

Alexis,

When I see an Animal in distress and poor conditions I often rescue them also.
If it makes you feel better then by all means rescue him.
Since you have Firsthand knowledge You can mitigate the purchase somewhat by reporting them on the BOI names and all.

Best of luck!

Glad to hear there were so many options for temporary housing. I hope you save the poor thing, and I hope it's healthy with a long comfortable life ahead of it.

The clips you are speaking about actually are called 'bulldog'?
Thanks Myca

^^This^^

Thats exactly what I did when I had 4 of them :D

When are you getting him? If you are going to issue a complaint, take a photo of the conditions as proof. (if you can)

Good luck & can't wait to see him.

I really hope you will reconsider giving money to any business that neglected and mistreated any animal.

Yes thats what they are called. You can find them at walmart. they are different than binder clips, I reckon they are more heavy-duty and clamp on stronger.

I have to agree with Chip. Please reconsider giving any money to this store. If you want to give a good home to a snake in need, why not contact a local rescue or animal shelter? I found my new Leo at one and they often get in snakes as well. There are also many reputable breeders on this site as well who may have what you are looking for.
