how big does a corn snake have to be to eat a pinkie

I was recently given a very young corn snake by my wife for my birthday. My question is this thing is about the size of a ballpoint pen and maybe 14" long. Should he be able to handle a pinkie or what should I be feeding him? This is my first experience with a snake and just want to make sure I'm doing it right. thanks for the help

Pinkies can vary widely in size. Any cornsnake hatchling should be able to eat a one or two day old pink which is about the size of a Jelly Belly. Pinks can get up to 4 grams, though, which might be too big for a weeks-old corn. If you look at the widest part of the snake (not his head and neck) he will be able to easily eat a pink that is the same diameter as the snake, or just a little bigger. I would start out small and work up.

What Nancy said! My hatchlings are eating extra small pinky mice that are like a day old if that

If need be you can always cut the pinkie in half. I had to do that for a while for one of my runt kingsnakes.

Thanks for the help. My wife told me that she was told to feed him crickets, but that just didn't sound right.

WTH, who tells someone to feed a corn crickets? That's the most absurd thing I've ever heard! Sorry you guys were so badly misinformed!

Pinkies can come teeny, or can be sliced in half. Yummy! :)

That's what I was thinking. I guess that's what you get for getting one from petco. But like I said, it was a gift (that I was NOT expecting) and she didn't know any better. Other than that, he's GREAT!
