how can i tell if female is gravid

Self explanitory title. How can I tell if a female is gravid? I was told the male and female given to me have bred.

You might be able to feel the eggs as lumps in her lower third, either in her sides or her belly. Easiest to feel if you let her slide through your hand. However, not all females exhibit this.

Before laying, most females will go off their food and be restless, hunting around the tank for a laying spot. You'll need to put a laying box in the tank if there's a chance she might lay, otherwise you risk her laying somewhere inappropriate like the water bowl, or getting eggbound.

Sometimes immediately before laying they get very bloated in their lower third and feel almost wobbly when you pick them up.

On the other hand, some females exhibit none of the above signs. Apart from that, the only foolproof method of telling whether a female is gravid, is when she lays eggs!

Thank you I thought I felt eggs. I haven't bred snakes before so this part is new for me. Working on an incubator now just in case. The guy I got them from only had them for a few weeks. Don't they carry eggs for about 9 weeks?

No, it's more like 4-6 weeks. Most (but not all!) female's will have a pre-lay shed about 2 weeks before they lay.

Ok thanks. I'm going to find out exactly how long he had them and when he said he saw them breeding. I've been doing some research on the details of all this and appreciate the help I can get.

hold her by the neck and let the rest of the length hang down freely, and if you see egg lumps / ripples on her belly, she's gravid.

It's not just about when they mated, it's also about when the female ovulates. Females can store sperm so it won't necessarily be "deployed" immediately. Unfortunately you can't always calculate directly from the first or last successful hookup.

If you keep an eye on the forum, we've just had a post from someone whose female laid four months after mating.
