How do I divide a 40-gal?

Caryl

BrightHope
My husband ran across and purchased a 40-gal glass viv while I was out of town. I guess all those subliminal nessages about how corn snakes are amazing are sinking in. At any rate, I'd like to divide it into 2 or 3 sections for now. My corns are all '07s, so that should allow generous space with lots of hides for 2 or 3 of them. What do I use as the dividing material? Is plexiglass acceptable? Do they stress if they can see each other? Should I use plywood instead? How about styrofoam?

Each "apartment" will have its own UTH, hides, water dish, etc.

Thanks in advance.

I haven't done it yet, but I'm planning on using plexiglass for mine. I just got a 125 gallon (for $50!) that I'm going to divide into three, for bigger snakes and make into a head board. We've all heard of sleeping with the fishes, but I prefer to sleep with the snakes. I'm also building a multi-unit viv system that I will be dividing with plexiglass also. I'm also thinking I'll try and use silicone (or something like it) to make the seals around the plexi. This is just my theory at this point, but it seems logical to me. As far as the snakes being bothered with seeing each other, I just don't know, but had wondered myself. Let us know what you decide and how it works out, okay?

Gee, Daneale, a headboard!?! WOW. Thanks for the thread tip, LBoz. I'll be working on it when I get home. Thanks for the tips so far. I'm still looking for thoughts about plywood and how the snakes might react to seeing each other at close quarters. Some of my vivs are currently sharing the same table, so they can see each other now, but that's not the same as being nose-to-nose through the plexiglass.

Caryl...you can also try using xray film siliconed onto either side of the plexiglass (if you choose to go that route). It's dark enough that they wouldn't really see each other, but thin enough that it's easy for you to manipulate. If you know any nurses, I'm sure you could easily get some. The xray department always has tons of sheets that they toss every day from bad films.

Yes, I'm strange. Now my 10 year old daughter has decided that she's going to take one of the old 20 gallons, (when I move all the snakes) and make that into a fish tank headboard. I wonder where she gets it from.:shrugs:

That's a really interesting idea. Maybe you could some of your own old x-rays. That way your snakes would be more familiar with who their owner is. Good idea, though.

I went to Lowe's where they sold me a piece of scrap plexi for $1.00 and used silicone sealant to attach it. You'll need to put some weight on the top center of the screen. I don't care how small, they can climb and 'break on through to the other side'.

That looks really, really nice. Apparently you're not having problems with them being able to see each other? You've made me decide to definately use plexi, at least. Cool. Thank you.

That looks awesome, Danny!

If you DO have issues with them seeing each other, you could always paint them, too. Fusion paint is great for plastic.

Silicone is great! I didn't notice anyone suggesting tape. But just in case anyone decides to try it out, I wanted to warn those who don't already know that snakes ALWAYS seem to get stuck on tape, no matter how well you seal it down. You may not have planned to use tape in this case, but I always repeat that warning any chance I get. There is always somebody new reading who hasn't heard of the problems it can cause. I have managed to get a few snakes stuck over the years before I realized just how good they are at getting under the edge of it, as have many other long time keepers.

Have fun with your new tank(s)!

Good to know Kathy! Thanks! For creatures with no arms they sure are able to manipulate their way into (or out of - lol) ANYTHING!

Thanks for tips, everybody. I've been away from the computer, out exploring. (Found a baby Pacific gophersnake, too!) Kathy, I wasn't going to use tape. I learned that from your book.

LBoz, the xray film is an idea I'd never have considered. I have plexiglass, and dwyn's viv looks great. I still wonder about the snakes being so potentially in each other's face/visual space.

Daneale, strange was NOT the adjective that came to my mind. Innovative, intersting, unique - not strange.

Thanks again. I'll post a picture when I get home and get it fixed.
