How do I set thermostat?

I bought a thermostat that didn't come with instructions and I'm unsure of how to set it. The packaging says: Automatically turns heaters and air conditioners off when desired temperature is reached.

I'm assuming I set it to the temperature I want (27C), is this right?

The thermostat is plugged in at the moment. I set it to 27C and the temperature hasn't risen yet.

Here's a pic of the thermostat:

welll you have to fine tweak the thermostat. it might say what you want it at, but never trust it. put in a thermo or get a temp gun. then you adjust accordingly. i have a helix for corns set at 90 and it gets the cages to about 85-89. thats farenheight of course. so just fine tweak it as needed. never trust the thermostat to be dead on.

It didn't come with a probe but I bought a separate thermometer. Also, the thermostat isn't made specifiically for reptile cages. The package just says it's for heaters and air conditioners.

Then it's not going to work with a heat source for a reptile.

The reptile thermostats have a sensor probe, which senses the temperature of the heat source it is placed on(heat mat)/under(bulb or ceramic) and therefore turns the heat source on or off/up or down according to the temperature it is sensing. This temperature still has to be checked with a digital thermometer.

It seems that the one you have bought would have the sensor built into the unit, for sensing the ambient temperature of the room and as you can not place the whole unit on/under the heat source, it will not regulate it.

Hope that helps a little :)

I agree, it's not going to work for a reptile enclosure. A thermostat for a reptile enclosure has a temperature probe built in. You plug in the UTH to the thermostat and place the probe in the viv, directly on top of the UTH, right on the glass/plastic. When the UTH reaches the temp you have set, say 85F, it shuts off the UTH. So with yours, it's going to sense the air temp. By the time the air temp reaches 85F, the UTH will be at its max temp of 120-130F, which will burn your snake. No, the snake does not know to stay away from a surface to hot it can get burned. They sense temperatures and react to them differently than humans do. By the time the snake finds out the surface is too hot, when the _inside_ of its body reaches too high a temp, the outside has already been severly burned. So you will need to buy a reptile-specific thermostat either from a pet store or on-line. Or make your own rheostat, or buy a lamp dimmer, but these are much less accurate than a thermostat and require constant monitoring as the ambient temperature of the room changes.
