how do snakes get shipped?

They pack it in a deli cup in an insulated box, with an ice pack or a heat pack near them if neccessary. They are shipped overnight, so that they do not have to sit too long in such a cruddy way. Also, the boxes are labeled with "live animal" so that the handlers know not to be too rough with them.

The charges for shipping and handling vary depending on the individual dealer. They generally range from about $35 to $50 for normal shipping within the US, but they can be higher for some special shipments. Shipping charges from the carriers have gone up a lot this year, so in some cases a dealer may actually be charging less than his cost. In fact, many breeders had to raise the price for shipping over the last 2 years.

yes, just for shipping
overnight shipping isn't cheap, and then you have to take into account the cost of the box, the insulation to line the box, the other shipping materials, the time taken to secure the snake safely in the box, and the time taken to get the box to whatever place it needs to be shipped from. Time is money,

this is why many people prefer to buy from local breeders or at shows they can drive to to avoid shipping costs
