How do you know if your snake is tame enough?

Bo's Mommy!
Sorry if this might be in the wrong spot (I can't think of a better thread page to put it in).. Anyways, How do you know if your snake is tame enough? I have been trying to handle my snake for minutes at a time up to about half an hour a day for several days now.. He hasn't bitten me yet and he doesn't seem to shake like a ''rattlesnake'' anymore although he still gets into that ''S'' position and stares at my hand.. I usually pick him up by the belly as he is moving to the other side, after I try to scoot him out of the corner he is in. How long does it usually take if I handle him daily for a few minutes at a time? How would I know if he is finally tame as well? :eek1:

Him being tame is probably a matter of your judgment. As far as the "S" shape, I wouldn't worry about it. Unless he looks like he wants to strike, the S position is normal. Mine still does that, and can just stare at me for hours. I imagine that if a big giant hand reached down from the sky, you would probably take a few steps back and observe the situation. When you pick him up I would suggest just scooping him up, not trying to convince him to move and grab his belly. IMHO, tameness is just getting to a point where your corn no longer strikes or is extremely timid.

Tame enough for what? They're not domesticated animals. Most tolerate handling very well-- a select few do not. The bite of the biggest, meanest cornsnake is less damaging than that of the most rambunctious 10-week old kitten at play. My bleepin' 4.6 pound chihuahua has hurt me worse just fooling around than any of the hundreds of snakes I've owned. Don't worry about it.

My corn did the whole rattle snake, strike at you thing for about a week and a half before he got used to being handled. just keep handling him, feedinghim and giving him fresh water and he should tolerate you in no time.

:)

Thanks for that little tidbit too! I will keep up everything that i am doing and hopefully he will feel better about me handling him.:)

theyres no such thing as a "tame" snake it only gets tollorant of you wont bite snakes no matter what theres alsways a chance of a bite......

dog = tame, i trust him and he knows better

snake = tollorant, not as much trust and doesnt know better

understand, im sure you already knew that, its just easier to say tame...i know

I would have said as soon as they stop biting :) It may not hurt too much, but I sure prefer not to be bite. Reminds me of grabbing for a nettle and I don't do that :)
