How long does it take?

How long does it take for a hatchling to become it's adult size? What are the different stages of growth?

Jenny,

There are just too many variables to give a single answer. How often it eats, how nutritious is it's food, temperatures all contribute to the speed of growth. Most books I've read say that it takes 3 years or so on average. A well fed juvenile can reach adult size quicker, but it might not be fully an adult. Conversely, even adults never completely stop growing, the rate of growth just slows waaaay down.

if you meen how long will it be before it is big. Normally it takes about 2 - 3 years but as the last post said it is very hard to give a definate answer

Okay, thanks. I figured it was at least two years. I was trying to figure out why you have to buy frozen mice in such large quantities if you only have one snake, but I'm guessing they eat one size for a while.

Somewhat of an extreme example, but if you order online, you'd pay the same shipping cost for 1 mouse as you would 500, so you buy in bulk.

If all else fails, get more of a smaller size. You can double up (2 pinks, for instance). Much easier than making a big item smaller.

How big is your corn? I/We can give you a guesstimate of how many of each you will need?

I dont know if this will help but the will generaly be too big for pinkys after 6 to 7 months ... but dont take this as gospal because there are alot of factors that determin how fast it will grow.

You should buy 6 months in advange at most. 3 preferable. Even in frozen state nutricial value slowly goes down over time. Perhaps even faster with pinkies.

I buy in quantity because i currently have around 40 snakes :p Then you need bulk.

I buy in bulk as well but I vacuum seal all of my immediate need (2-3 months) prey items in lots of 5 to 10 per bag and my non immediate need prey items in lots of 50.

Steve

I tend to disagree. As long as you store them properly, the nutritional value will not decrease.

On to food: I'd get the smallest bag of pinks you can buy. Most places sell them in bags of 50 or 100, but some will sell in 25. Get a bag of pinks, a bag of fuzzies, and a bag of hoppers. That should suit you for QUITE A WHILE.

I order from http://www.americanrodent.com/ and have had no problems. They're also located in Indiana, so you may be able to meet them (or work out some other deal) to avoid shipping.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I have read both versons. But not any studys.I would think like you that if you seprate most and use up a bag full first it would be fine but ... I'm not convince one way or the other yet.

books and internet sites say hatchling till 6 months, and then they are called yearlings at their 1 year mark. from thier the become sub-adult, and then full adult. From the articles also says that it depends on length of the snake, to determine whether they are sub-adults or adults.

Do you happen to know a weight? Also, another way of telling size - what (and how many) are you currently feeding?

No i don't know it's weight. I tried mentioning to my husband that we need a scale and he freaked out, so it's going to be a while before I can get one. I'm going to try to find a vet near where we live and see if I can take him in there to weigh him once a week, or would that be too stressful for him?

I fed him for the first time yesterday... I've only had him since Wednesday. He ate a 1-2 day old pinkie. I think he needs a bit bigger because I could barely see a lump right afterwards and Lucas (my hubby) said he can't see anything today.

So how old do you all think he is... I think now he's 12-13 inches.

You might or might not know this but a general rule of thumb is to feed your snake an food item that is 1 1/2 times the snakes girth.
Now Roy made a good thread on feeder size that you could refer too but like me you need a scale. http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50106
I would just go with the general rule for now.
And if you think the snake is 12 -13 long, I think it could be 4-6 month old.

And while I have it out. Here....

Are there any links directly pertaining to me? The links were very helpful. I think I know what my little guy is now. I think he's a bloodred. He looks a lot like this.

I also like the link on measuring your snake. I really do need to invest in a scale though.

I buy and sell old coins and jewelry so I just bring home one of my scales from work. I'm guessing cheap food scales would be fine too.
