how long is to long to handle

my corns young and eating fuzzies, i love holding him while relaxing around the house, but how long is 2 long to handel at once

I guess it gets too long when the corns start stressing out. Gaia still is a bit touchy when it comes to handling but she is getting better. She no longer tries to bite me as she use to when I first got her but 5 minutes is about her limit. Now, Smokey and Konig, I can hold them all night long and they'll go to sleep on me but then they are old-timers. :grin01:

If they are comfortable being handled for a long time, don't worry.

(Now, I may be wrong and I know a Senior member will correct me) :shrugs:

Iv'e heard that 20 minutes is max but i often hold mine for longer and sit out in the sun, they really seems to enjoy that.

I agree with will, they seem to love the sun. Never seen mine so active as when I've taken him outside. As for handling time, it probably largely depends on the snake. Some will hate it, some won't mind it quite as much. Just a matter of watching for behaviour I suppose. :)

It's probably important to keep the snake's viv out of direct sunlight, since it would overheat so quickly. I've never heard of keeping a snake out of direct sunlight- that's crazy!

Well, the vampire snakes DO have to avoid direct sunlight, Nanci. ;)

And I think there must be quite a number of vampire snakes out there, because there've been a lot of posts lately expressing an extreme level of concern about being bitten . . . :grin01:

I don't think there is a "too long to handle" unless your snake remains stressed out the entire time you're handling it. But I can't imagine that happening. Even the fiestiest wild-caught snakes usually settle down after a few minutes when they realize you're not going to eat them.

And the tamest captive snakes go psycho sometimes when you kiss their backs, because they think you are going to eat them!

Since I keep my snakes in a classroom, I limit the handling of baby snakes (under 6 months) to 10 minutes twice a day. The older snakes can be out for 15 to 20 minutes 2 or 3 times a day. They don't seem to stress out at all with this amount of handling. I think each snake is different and you have to judge by your snake's reactions.
