How long is too long?

We fed our snake yesterday and it has been in it's hide all day today. Is this normal? The temp in the terrarium is 78 F on the warm side. We have been trying to get the temp up to 80 but with no luck. We have a rock heater in the tank also but he wont or hasn't gone on it. What should I do?

Corns will hide away for a few days after eating, so that behaviour is normal.

Hot rocks generally get far too hot for Corns, so it's just as well he's staying away from it. See your other thread for heating advice.

See, the box the rock heater came in said it was perfect for helping corn snakes digest their food.

I just took the heat rock out. i am going to see if my husband still has the receipt for it and the box and i'll take it back.

ya, there are lots of products out there like that, you really got to be careful when buying things for animals. There's no regulation like there is for human food or baby toys. I believe the old heat rocks had more problems and people claim the new ones are fine, but there's been too much damage done by them in the past that I don't think anyone is willing to trust them. They have a habit of heating unevenly, so one part can get really hot.

And when you say the heat won't get above 70, is that ambient heat or the temperature of the heat rock? You need a thermometer with a probe, so you can measure the heat of the area your snake is sitting on. The ambient heat can be a little lower, as long as the surface of their warm area is in the mid 80's.

My set up includes an undertank heater, and a table-top lamp dimmer (to turn down the temp if you need to, you can get them at home-deop), and a thermometer with a probe (an indoor/out door themometer. Walmart has them, I think). Some people also use thermostats instead of lamp-dimmers, and flexwatt heat tape instead of undertank heaters (same thing only different)

I hope that helps.

Yea i work at petsmart and for the past year i have made sure those heat rocks haven't sold, it's been the same two for that year now, you can tell they've been there awhile with all the dust on them, hahaha.

But yea Amy thats a honest mistake, the heat rock would be great if you could trust them, my buddy has one and he uses it for his burmese python and everything is fine but i wouldn't take the chance from all the horror stories i have heard.

As for getting your heat to 80 or higher on the warm side im having luck with an undertank heater and a 60 w infrared bulb, this is for a 20 gallon long

I have a 20 gallon long and all I use is a UTH, it is exo terra brand I think, or zoo med, not sure I will have to check, but that heats my tank fine, and if Star gets cold she will normally just burry herself in the aspen, but so far no problems, And I have a digital thermometer with a probe on the glass and I check the top of the aspen every now and then ;)

im using reptile carpet so i dont have any substrate to hold that UTH heat so i need that bulb as well :(
