How long should I leave her...

Phaedra

Witty phrase
How long should I leave my new snake (I bought her yesterday) before handling her? I was planning on a few days, leaving her to settle in and only disturbing hr for water changes. The pet shop I bought her from said this should be adequate as well. But somebody else said I should leave her a few weeks. I want to get her used to my smell and used to being handled as soon as possible, but I obviously don't want to scare her or stress her out by handling her too soon.

And also, how long do you leave your snakes after feeding before handling them? I've heard anything between 2 - 48 hours!

Thanks

I would say wait 1-5 days. If your snake seems to be settled in take her out and see. I would wait at least 2 days.

Good luck

To get most of your answers. You can do a search on this forum, there is a wealth of information here. Any answers you can't find there are many forum members who are more then willing to help you. In saying that, it is said to let your snake settle for about 5 days before handling. After feeding, most agree that a 48 hour digestion period should be used before handling. Good Luck and HAVE FUN!

My policy is to leave them alone for four to five days, which is when I offer their first meal. Right or wrong, I don't change their water during this period. I think my arm reaching in and out is just adding to the stress. I'll fill it if it needs it, but otherwise I leave them totally alone other than peeking from a respectable distance (meaning I don't press my nose up to the glass :D )

The first time, I handle for 10 or 15 minutes max. Which is basically enough time to snap a couple of pictures, including one to use to get a length measurement and weigh them.

My experience is limited to two from 01 and three from this year... so take it (my advice) for what you think it's worth :)

I give them a few days at most. Depends upon what my schedule is. Judge it by the snake. If when you go to take it out, it seems really stressed and doesn't settle. Wait a little longer. My first one was held from day one and fed on the third day and he never refused a meal in his life (except at breeding time). So it's all kind of depends upon the snake itself.

I leave mine 3-5 days when I first get them, and 48 hours minimum after feeding.

I agree to this. And the feeding part is a good idea too.
