How long will a 20L suffice for a corn?

Krazy About Snakes
The title pretty much says it all. I have a yearling (about 2') in a 20 Long aquarium now and am planning on getting a male in another pretty soon. I was just wondering how long they would last in a 20L (30x12x12).

Pretty much the life of the snake, but somebody stated that the tank should be (length and width of tank) at least the length of the snake. Hope that helps. :wavey:

20L is the minimum recomended size for an adult corn. Personally I think its too small for an adult, but it should last you quite a while anyway.

I have my sons 17 month Amel in a 35g tank and he will be getting moved to a 50 g real soon in the next two weeks.
A 20 Litre tank is what 16-17g i would move him to a bigger one.
My adult 8yr old corn is over 5ft long and in a 75g and i am thinking of getting him a bigger tank.
Some people say that if the tank is to big they will get stressed just keep this in mind in the wild they have unlimited amount of space.

Pics of my tanks are in the photo section but hear they are

Hi! My corn is in a 50 gallon now, and I really think that it is the minimum size for my taste in what a 5 feet (and bigger) corn needs . IMHO, only the hatchlings get stressed out by a big area. Really, an adult isn't going to stress even in a 150 gallon tank. He'd love it!. What I think does stress my big adult is the 50 gallon being so open to the room (seeing through the glass). Thats just my opinion, but I'm going to put decorated paper around the three back sides to help him fell more secure.

That is what I did for mine. helped alot. Was out and about more often afterward.

Questions about the decorated paper... what do you use, do you attach it on the inside or outside of the glass, and what do you use to attach it? I don't want to use anything harmful to Naga/Gia. Thanks.

attach it to the outside of the tank only .
Use what ever typ of paper/material you want to use .i use black garbage bag and i use scotchtap to attach it to the tank.

I let my daughter paint or color a background on big drawing paper, then tape it to the back. Pet stores sell fancy backgrounds also.

I take five profile, (vertical), pictures to line the back of my 20L's with a little left over to cover some of the sides. To do this you have to line up in the center of the area you want as a background, then pan to the left two shots over and start taking pics overlapping each one a little bit until you've shot all five. (until you get enough practice, you might want to take an extra shot on each side in case they overlap a lot shortening the whole picture.) I then upload and print on plain white paper 8 1/2 x 11 and tape them together on the overlap in order (after cutting off the left border of each, except the first). I then center them on a piece of cardboard cut to the size of the back of my tank, then tada! your own original background. It takes practice, but it's a lot of fun, and looks great when you get the hang of it. It's taped to the cardboard so you can change them whenever you want.... If you want examples, let me know and I'll go shoot some pics of my vivs....

saying 20 gallon/30 gallon/50 gallon is all very well, but what do you actually mean by this? Could you please give dimensions instead? Like the length and width in inches?

That site gives a 40 gallon long as 48 inches long by 12 inches wide but it also gives a 50 gallon as 36 inches long by 18 inches wide. Would either be aceptable/comfy for an adult (5ft corn)?

The vivarium I'm planning on getting is 36 inces long by 24 inches wide...I want the best for the snake I get, so don't want it squished in a cage too small

Breeder tanks are wider... I have a 30 L.B. and it's 18" wide... The turtle is in a 40 tall breeder that is 18" wide, but the regular 20 L's are 12" wide....

Dang, I'm too quick on the button :D.... Everything I've read says that corner to corner diag. it should be at least half the length of your snake, so an 18" wide sounded better to me. I'm sure I'll end up switching all of mine to 30 lb's by the time they are adults...

CaptBogart, thank you for posting that informative link. I came to read this post because I was worried my tank may not be large enough, but according to that site it is exactly the right size. So thank you for putting my mind at rest. :)

My "50 gallon" is weird, its 37 inches long, 16 wide, and about 20? tall. IMHO, 36Long by 16 wide should work well. I've seen the 12 wide ones and they are just too narrow.

I have my 45 inch bullsnake in a 55 gallon and I wish I had a tank that was little bit wider. She loves the extra room (she used to be in a custom glass 28 X 16 X 14) but she doesnt have much room to coil up. I would just build a 3 X 2 X 2 cage for your adult corn if you can. That way its the perfect size and doesnt take up much room and they look much nicer than glass aquariums.

i agree with brownsfan...i'm planning on getting a sturdy bookcase or some piece of used furniture and converting it into vivs for my snakes when they grow into adults.
there are some oddball tanks out there...a 50 gal at one petstore may be different dimensions than a 50 gal at another store. they all hold the same amount (50 gals) but may be wider or deeper. and when you're buying for a cornsnake you want more floorspace, not much height (empty air space). when in doubt, bring a tape measure. thats what i did when i bought my last tank. i also wanted to make sure it would fit in the spot i planned to put it and on the stand that i currently owned.

Well, I am going to stay as it is right now, a 20 gal long (30x12X12 inches). Molly is only about 2 ft long, so she can stretch out and coil up with ease anywhere in the cage. When she gets bigget I will probably go to a 50 gal for the rest of her life. She has a nice vivarium set up now with plenty of hides, water, and climbind items. She seems happy (maybe I am giving her anthropomorphic traits, I don't know). Anyway, she is eating well, adjusting well to handling, and growing.
