How many hours does it take...

for a 15 year old to put together a rack? If you guessed 12 hours then you are correct!

So, when I got home from Nashville today my animal plastics rack had arrived. I opened the two boxes up and followed the instructions without many difficulties. (Ok, so my parents helped too). When it got to the part of installing the heat cable I looked at the cable and on one end it is just a black square thing and the other is a 3 prong grounded plug. On my spyder robotics herpstat there are two different cables. One is a two prong plug that would go into the wall and the other is a female side. This side only lets you plug in a 2 prong plug. (Does this make sense?)

How do I get the thermostat hooked up to the heat cable? I think the point of the thermostat is to control how hot the cable is. Am I totally crazy or is something wrong?

Thanks!

You have to buy an adaptor, Dave. At Home Depot or Lowes or whatever. I was a little annoyed that they didn't mention that. I just plugged the cable into the wall to get it warm enough to place, but then unplugged it because it gets freaking hot! Do you need me to take a picture of the adaptor?

I can't believe it took you that long to assemble the rack! You must have used a hand screwdriver...

Sorry to hear of your assembly problems. Good practice for Christmas Even in about 20 years when you decide to get your tyke a present that says, "Some assembly required."

The third plug is for grounding, which isn't terribly necessary in this application. The adapter Nancy showed you will work just fine.

Thank you both so much! So I can get an adaptor and attach it to the 3 prong plug and then plug that into the thermostat and it should work? Sounds easy enough. The hard part is mostly finished other than the two back slabs that go on after the heat cable.

I was kidding when I said it took me 12 hours...more like 2, but we did use a hand screwdriver. I will go get an adaptor tomorrow if all the stores are open on New Years. Pictures will be up tomorrow!

Even better...I showed my mom the picture of the adaptor and a few seconds later she came in from the garage with one! I think I will wait until morning so we can test out the thermostat and then I can take the glass cages outside and wash them out and move the snakes into their new homes.
