how many hours of daylight??

Hi,I just bought a timer for my light, how many hours of daylight do corn snakes need .
im using a 60 watt bulb/hood with a homemade dimmer for the day and i have a heating pad for the night (just incase you where wondering).

They don't really NEED light. It's more so an aesthetic thing for the keeper to be able to see them. The heat pad will be fine on its own.

i do think they need light. if you want the best for your snake you should try to copy their natural habitat in their viv so in nature snakes have light so in the viv they should have light to. you can use a uva lamp for this (these one doesn't create heat) best is u put it on a timer 12 hours on 12 hours off

Actually, in their natural environment, they're sleeping during the day, being a nocturnal creature. Light isn't required. It's just a way for pet stores to sell something else. If light was required, every breeder would be out of business because of their electricity bills because they would have to have lights in every slot of every rack.
If you have your viv in a room with a window that gets natural light, that's more than enough.

Thanks for the replies,it wasnt so much whether or not they need light or not i was wondering more on how long i should have my lights on , would 12 hours be a good time period of light like someone said above? its mostly so i can view them but the lamp would be their heat source for the day 12 hour period and UTH for the nights.

12 hours is good, i also give them 12 hours of light and every time the light goes off she comes out of her hole

Why don't you run the UTH 24/7 and then turn the light on when you are home? That would probably be the easiest way...

well that's kind of what I'm going for , plus the weather has been pretty cold lately so id rather use the lamp for the day 12 hour period.

i also put the uth on 24 hours sicle but u should use a thermostat. then you can put the light on a timer it's very easy and cheap, and you don't need to do aything about it anymore

the uth should cover 1/4 to 1/2 of the tank

While 1/4 to 1/3 of the tank would be fine, I think that half the tank is a bit too much. The heat pad isn't just going to heat the area of tank that's directly above it, but also around it. You want to make sure that your corn has a place to escape from the heat by providing a nice thermal gradient.

I use a 60 watt on one end of the tank. I always turn it on and off every 12 hours. I would use only a UTH OR a light, because with both it may get too hot. My 60 watt keeps it around 85 degrees on the warm side and high 70's on the cool side. I've never had any problems with just the light.

I meant to say that it may get too hot unless you use a thermostat and/or a dimmer.
