How often do you replace all the bedding?

Hi. I have a 6 month old corn in a 40 gallon long viv. How often should I do a TOTAL replace of all substrate? I do spot cleans every day and I clean the glass and his toys every week. :shrugs:

I like to do a drive by in the snake room a couple times a day to make sure no one's regurged or having trouble with a shed. If a spot clean is called for, I do so. I also spot clean when I feed, every five days for juveniles. But everyone gets a total clean once a month, including rinsing the viv with a dilute bleach.

It's probably overkill, but it makes me feel better.

I do a total clean around every 6 months, give or take a week or two. I do a spot clean every day. And if an area's really dirty (like if poop gets stuck to the acrylic) I'll completely clean that area, and take out a whole bunch of the bedding from there. And then I just transfer some bedding from some other area. :rollyes:

Once a month? Isnt that overkill? He only poops like 5 times a month lol. Thats like 35 bucks worth of substrate a month. :shrugs:

35 dollars? Do you use Reptibark? That's what I'm using for now, but I'm switching to aspen soon because it's so expensive.

If you're worried about the money, aspen is really cheap. "Aspen Snake Bedding" is 12 dollars for 24 quarts (6 gallons).

When I first researched about corn snakes, most sources that I got said that I only needed to do a complete clean about once every year. I thought that was just plain gross, so I do it every six months.

I clean out completely once a month. I don't have a set-in-stone schedule though, so it sometimes goes a couple of weeks over.

I do a total cleanout about every three to four months. More or less, depending on circumstances. When I first started researching snakes, I was told by some people (not on this forum) that you don't really need to do a total cleanout until your tanks start smelling. I've never let mine go that long, but once a month does seem like overkill to me, especially for the ones who are on 10-14 day feeding schedules. That works out to only 2-3 poops a month.

Once every 6 months has worked for me. The only time I've smelled anything bad was when Rose left me an exceptionally large poopie for me the other week. But it stopped smelling after I took it out. Usually, the poops are fairly small, and the smells stay in the cage, and it's no problem to just take them out and throw them away.

HOLY!!! I research 1 month ago and everyone is saying total clean out once a month... Now it jumps to 4-6 months!!! What the hell is going on :shrugs:

It's just person to person. It's what they prefer themselves. I don't want to go buy bedding every month, and the viv doesn't need it. My snakes are healthy, and the viv doesn't smell. What else do you need? Every 6 months has worked for me. If you want to go do it every month, be my guest.

Nothing has "jumped" anywhere. If you will read this thread, there are actually more responders who still say once a month for a total cleanout. Just because two of us don't clean that often doesn't mean that any info has changed. You just have to use your brain and decide what is right for you.

I have to say that I like to do mine every 2 months-ish...sometimes less than that and I do it every month. I use aspen and I find it takes on a bit of a 'damp' smell to it after a while...I like the smell of fresh aspen...lol.

Oh wow...well I the aspen once every two weeks. My snakes aren't remotely smelly and I don't use that much bedding since they're small. They have enough to tunnel under plus I have two giant bags.

If I have newpaper/papertowels down then I do a complete change as the papers are soiled.
