How often to feed?

FamilyOfExotics

Merry Meet!
I have read a couple different versions of when to feed your snake. Some people say only once a week (every 7 days) for its whole life. Yet, other people say every 5 days while its a hatchling, then every 7 days as it gets older. Which is best?

I came across this guide, that seems quite reasonable. Does anyone recommend this feeding schedule? It has a name but I can't seem to remember it right now.

Snake| Mouse
Weight| Age | Weight | Frequency
4-15g | Single Pink | 2-3g | Every 4-5 days
16-23g | Double Pinks | 3g (x2)| Every 4-5 days
24-30g | Small Fuzzy | 5-7g | Every 5-6 days
31-50g | Regular Fuzzy | 7-9g | Every 5-6 days
51-90g| Hopper | 9-12g | Every 5-6 days
91-170g| Weaned | 14-20g| Every 7 days
171-399g| Adult | 24-30g| Every 7-X* days
400g+ | Jumbo Adult | 40-50g| Every 7-X* days
**Adult females are fed more frequently than adult males (especially following brumation). Females are fed every 6-8 days, while males are fed every 7-14 days.

Hopefully that makes sense, it doesn't format very nicely here!

Looks to be the munson plan. It's a completely reasonable feeding schedule. Some people say it's a little agressive, but that's what I follow to feed Riddle :)

That is known as the Munson plan. Some people find it is a rather aggressive feeding schedule for the general pet corn and loosely use it as a guide. Mostly extending the weight ranges, to reduce the possibility of regurge.

Thats the name I was trying to think of! I will try eyeballing it for when I need to move up a size. Look out for how long the 'feeding lump' is visible for, and try to judge it by the width of his body as well, in comparison to his weight.

I don't really follow a "plan" because "weight" doesn't take into consideration the distribution of that weight. So I'll feed appropriately sized based on his girth and adjust frequency later with age. Everyone else has everything covered well though, was just a "two cents" post from me this time around.

So do you feed once a week? I'm really new to snakes, so I want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to give him the best life possible :) I think I will follow the plan to an extent. I'm going to stick with what it recommends, but keep a very close eye on weight and size, and alter accordingly. Hopefully we won't have any issues!

I think following or slightly altering the plan is a great idea. As you get to know your snake you may find you need to change things up :)

While we're on the topic of feeding, weights, and sizes... Remember to size your food. Not all frozen/thawed are created equally, especially if you buy the mass marketed stuff from pet stores. It's always a good idea to visually size up the food, and also a good idea to weigh it too. Taking care in food sizes now can prevent a potential regurge later if/when you accidentally feed a pinky that's just a bit too large for the snake to handle (but still marketed as a pinky).

I totally forgot about weighing the prey, thank you for reminding me! I just bought 10 more from a local store, I will have to weigh them! I'm hoping to buy some wholesale pinkies and maybe some fuzzies next month. My ferrets eat a raw diet, so they love their whole prey too! :p

Hi everyone!
I've had my corn for just about one year (since she was a wee little hatchling). Anyway, we've gotten settled into feeding once every ten to fourteen days. It seems like every time I research how often to feed, I get a very different answer. Since she's used to feeding as she is, do you think it would be a good idea to feed more often? A few things, she seems perfectly healthy, clear nostrils, bright eyes, nice round shape, perfect sheds, excellent temperament, pretty active, etc. Is this ok or am I being cruel? Thanks for your help!

Quick edit, I used to feed her more frequently, but I read somewhere that as she got older to slow down the frequency.

All of our adults are fed every 14 days (starting from when they reached the small mouse stage). I did every 5 days as hatchlings up to fuzzies, at fuzzies went to weekly feedings, and at small mice we switched to every 14 days.

We were feeding our adults weekly, but they were gaining weight faster than I was comfortable with, so we cut them back. They don't seem to suffer any ill effects from the longer time between feedings.
