I was holding my 04 corn today...watching tv like usual. Had him in my arms for a good 20mins, just petting down his back...

and then a big HISS, and he struck my hand!!! I mean, that was uncalled for! He has done it on very rare occasion while getting him out of his viv, but never while I was holding him!!! What a meany!

If he could talk he would say to you, "What do you think you're doing petting me down my backside? Do I look like a cocker spaniel to you....well do I?"
But he could only say it with a hiss and a strike. Snakes don't like their dorsal to be petted....feels to much like a predator attack to them.

I disagree

My snakes don't seem to have a problem with me petting them on their backs..none of them!!

But that's just my .02

My new hatchling hates to be touched on her backside. She coils into that S-shaped pre-strike position. She has yet to strike, but it is very obvious that she feels threatened when her dorsal side is touched.

That is the norm.
I've been keeping snakes for about 30 years (I purchased my first pet boa in 1974.) I have no idea how many snakes or types of snakes I've kept in that time but it must be in the thousands. And I've never met a snake yet that enjoyed being petted or held for long periods of time.

I think it's totally individual. My big snow girl stretches out her chin as I rub her under the chin with my finger. Another snake I have will sit as sstill as I do...or move as much as I do...to each their own.
