How to get snake off the top of the tank

Hi, my snake loves hanging out on the little ledge between the top of my tank and the wire mesh lid. That is fine, and it is nice to be able to get a close up look at her. The trouble is when I want to pick her up or feed her. I can't get her to come down from the ledge. I try tapping on the lid or moving the lid back and forth a little, but no luck. Then when I lift up the top, she falls down to the bottom of the tank. The couple times this has happened so far, she seems to be fine, but I would like to avoid the 18 inch drop if I could - any advice? Should I just wait and try to find a time she is somewhere else? It seems like she is on that ledge pretty often lately though.

I'd just wait till he/she came down. Do you have anything else in the cage for it to climb on? She might spend less time at the lid if she/he had some vines or something.

Mine climbs there, too, even with things to climb on. Falling won't hurt if it's only the 10/20gal tank height.

Do you have a deep layer of aspen for her to fall in, and scrunchy vines? Can you make the lower part more appealing? Maybe a reptile hammock? That being said, babies almost universally love that little ledge. She'll grow out of it.

I've had snakes do this before too. I ended up blocking off the ledges. I felt bad because they loved climbing up there so to make up for it I made them some climbing devices.

And have you taken the temp on and under the aspen, maybe it is too warm??

My snakes did this too when they were little. Now they're too big to even fit up there. :grin01: Both of them fell multiple times (one time my butter knocked over his driftwood tree when he fell...in the middle of the night!) and neither of them ever got hurt. As long as you have enough substrate to cushion the fall I wouldn't be too concerned. If it really worries you, you can keep them off by filling the ledge with silicone as mentioned above.

Both our snakes make their rounds to what we call, "the second floor." :)

Our one snake Snoops seems to be more of a klutz, as he has fallen several times from the top and when he does, it seems to be right over his water dish. Our other snake I've seen fall twice. They indeed like going up top and at night, we hear one or both of them poking at the top of the mesh lid.

When Orichimaru was a kid he would climb up there all the time, and fall down when i tried to feed him. I took a quick measurement of the ledge and went to home depot and bought some of the small square 1/4"x1/4" by 4 feet long wood. I cut it to fit and fill the ledge, then siliconed it in.

My snake used to do that every night. He would also fall off every time he went up there. One time he landed on his water dish that has a sharp edge and he got a little cut. Didn't bleed, but there was a cut. It healed after the next shed. After that he hasn't gone back up there. Maybe when your snake learns it's not a good idea, it will stop.
