How to Give Medicine?

I have to give my corn medicine for ten days and I need to open his mouth in order to give it to him.

How do I open his mouth without hurting him?

How old is he?

For hatchlings i use a toothpick to open up the mouth.
For adult ones u can use a small tweezer.

hope that will help you!

I too used toothpics for little ones, but for adults, I used the tube from a cotton swab, with the cotton ends cut off. Apply a little pressure at about 45* from the front and the snake would open up. Then put the tube all the way in, crosswise like a dog holding a stick. Insert the syringe straight in, and pull the q-tip tube out the side. Now you can insert the syringe a bit further and give it a squirt.

You do need 3 or 4 hands to do it this way, though.

Really, your vet should have demonstrated this for you when prescribing the medicine. Is there any way you can go back and ask them to do that? It certainly would be easier if you had someone else to hold the snake while you gave the medicine.

I use the cotton swab method as Bruce describes for hatchlings, or for older snakes, I slide the edge of a credit card (or similar) into the mouth and then twist it upwards slightly to open the mouth. In essence, the thing you're using to open the mouth must be blunt, cause minimal risk to teeth, and be easy to manipulate.

If using a syringe, make sure it goes right to the back of the throat before pressing the plunger. The tube that you'll see in the base of the mouth is the windpipe, and you want to be very sure you don't squirt the medicine down that, or you'll choke the snake. Sounds daft, but I did once answer a post from someone who was making that mistake.

I brought my snake back to the vet today and the vet showed me how to give him the medicine.

The reason the vet didn't show me yesterday was because it was night time when I pick up the medicine and the reptile vet wasn't there so my mom called today to ask if she could show us how to give him medicine and they said yeah and they didn't charge us either.

That's great news Reptiguy - I'm glad you've had a demo. Sometimes a written description of a technique is difficult to visualise.

I gave the medicine to my snake tonight with the help of my mom and it wasn't to hard to give it to him.
