How to place heat tape?!?

Ryan Harvey

Hey there,
I have seen quite a few different ways of placing the heat tape in a rack system?! What would the best way be for 3-4 inch flexheat tape? I am only heating corns/milks/kings..ect.. Under the bins? Behide them? What is the easiet? I have been planning on putting it under the back end of the bin? That should work shouldn't it? I've seen it done with 11' inch tape for larger bins..
Thanks in advance!
Ryan

I've done both under and behind. When doing it under you will need to make sure you can slide the tub over it smoothly without the tape getting caught up on the tub. I have a electric planer and I plane a notch for the tape to lay in to avoid wrinkling or folding of the heat tape.

I put mine along the back wall. haven't had an issue with heating this way. Some people will tell you that you have to have it under the bins for belly heat. but I think that is just total opinion. Most of the manufactured racks that you buy will have the heating source running from the bottom to the top along the back wall.

I built my first rack with back heat. This works but is more ineffecient at heating the cage. The heat tape runs a lot hotter to achieve the same temps as compared with belly heat. So I would go with belly heat.

belly heat here.

I also prefer to go with under the tub heating. As DAND did, I also made a shallow indent for the heat tape to lay in as to avoid catching and snagging. My heat tape is also 4 inch and is in corn racks. Works great for me so far. Hope that helps.
