How to tell if an egg is infertile?

Is there some way to tell ig a newly laid egg is fertilized or not, or do I just have to wait to see if it gets bad?

Slugs will be yellowish and slimey, Fertile eggs will be dry to the touch within a few minutes of laying. Fertile eggs will also show blood vessels when candled a few days after being layed.

One quick test that I have used over the years is to lightly spray the eggs with water. A good egg will absorb the water almost immediately, whereas a bad egg will stay wet looking for several minutes. A good egg is constantly trying to absorb the moisture around it.

This has been a pretty reliable test for me.

Also, if you see an egg started to "sweat", that is normally a bad sign.

similar to sweat as we know it - little beads of moisture over the surface of the egg
