humidity

how am I supposed to know if the humidity is bad/good? Penny shed her first night, but I hardly think that tells me anything about the humidity in her home with me. During the day my room is as humid as the tropics but at night it dries out a bit. They have water bowls in their cages so I think this helps. Will the nighttime dryness affect their shedding?

As long as the shed is whole and complete, the humidity is fine. Humidity is one of those "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" issues. Excessive humidity can cause problems too.

If you are interested in measureing the humidity, most pet stores sell humidity gauges for about $5.00. You can also find digital temp/humidity combo devices at Wal-Mart or Radio Shack for $20.00-35.00.

I've read that approx. 50% humidy is good for a corn, but both of mine had really bad sheds, and one good one at that level, so who knows???? I bought a guage from the pet store and the humidity stays at right around 50%. Both of my snakes seem to be doing fine, except for the wierd shedding problems. I tried humid hides but neither of mine used them. Hope this helps and good luck.

excess humidity

Cav..could you elaborate on what kind of health problems can excess humidity cause?? and what is the ideal humidity range around?

I think the CSM talks about skin infections and blistering from having excessive moisture in the viv, and especially in the substrate. They don't recommend having too much moisture, and making sure the substrate stays dry.

I just make sure there's water in the bowl for humidity. Last time my corn shed, the skin was wrapped around the water bowl.
