Hydrofarm thermostat and exo terra temp prob

Do the temps normally read the same or could there be a slight difference? I just hooked up the thermostat this morning, and have the heat mat plugged into it. I had to shut off the mat because it was getting way to hot (so put in a basking bulb till i got the thermostat) I have the thermostat set to 86. Right now the thermostat reads 76.6 and heating and the exo terra reads 79.6. Which should I base the actual temp off of to make sure it doesn't get too hot again?
It could level out once it has reached proper temperature right??

Oh, forgot to mention that I have both probs side by side under the substrate right over the glass

I'd leave the setup to run for a day before monitoring it closely. When there's a difference, I'd trust the thermometer reading. Thermostats can behave slightly differently depending on which make/model of UTH they're used with - although that shouldn't cause enough of a difference to be dangerous to the Corn.

As long as the maximum at the warm end doesn't exceed 90 for any length of time, you'll be fine. Aim for getting the warm side floor to the mid-80s on average, and you should have wiggle room either way.
