I bought an indoor/outdoor thermometer

Hello again, I bought this thermometer from radioshack on Monday and I was just wondering if its suitable enough to use.

Thermometer

Firstly, I am using a UTH. When I put the probe on the hottest point of the substrate, the highest it reached was about 97 degrees, I dont think thats good. I put the probe in the warm hide and it reached about 87-92 degrees. Also, I dont think its giving an accurate humidity level. The humidity is reading 32-44 degrees, it varies. What I am going to do is put a "humidity hide" consisting of a damp paper towel in a container and cover it and see what happens from there. My snake has not shedded yet, but before any problems happen, I might as well try to anticipate anything negative.

Where should I put the probe? Should I leave the probe on the warm side and then the reciever on the cool side? Any other suggestions?

I use that exact model to monitor temps in my BRB cages. I've been very pleased with it and it's accuracy matches my IR temp gun.

Since you're in NY is your heater running yet? Heaters drop the humidity dramatically indoors.

The probe goes in the center of the heated section of the warm end. Once you get a good reading, I'd recommend removing the probe.

hmm... you have me thinking I might not have had the right temp reading now. I have a digital thermometer and was using a UTH. If I had the probe under the hide, it would reach temps up to 97-100. But the stick on gauge that I have on the back of the tank about 2 inches from the bottom, was only ready 75-78. Since I was afraid of cooking my snakes, I turned off the UTH and bought a light that has 2 bulbs, one for night (red) and one for daylight. That seems to keep the the tank during the day at 80-82 under the hide and the stick on at the back runs 78-81 and at night it drops about 2 degrees. Which to me seems better for them.

But now I'm wondering.. Was the temp reading right with the UTH? Or should I have not left the probe in the tank. I'm also thinking that I'll have to use my UTH again when I add the reptile bark. Right now I just have the carpet in there and I shredded newspaper, which they love to hide under. Plus 4 hides.
