I have a strange problem and need help

My brother built me a tank for my corn and it has a 1/2" thick plywood bottom. Im not sure how I could do a UTH or any other heating, the lid is also plywood with screens cut in. I know that putting it UTH inside the tank is bad and Ive heard heat rocks are also bad. What do u guys think? I'll get some pics up asap. Thanks in advance!

You can put it inside the cage, but maybe put a ceramic tile over it and silicone around the tile to seal in the heater. It wont damage the wood since it is supposed to stay 80-90 degrees and the tile will act as a good buffer between the pad and the snake.

Thats a good idea! I didnt even think of that. The tank is about 1'x4'. Im thinkin I would need 2 UTH's? or maybe just one for say a 30gal tank?

Is the wood sealed with a non-toxic coating? I would be concerned of moisture ruining the wood at some point in time if its not sealed and it will also be impossible to completely sterilize. You may want to see if you and your bother can change out the wood bottom for 1/2" plexiglass.

The plywood is not sealed or anything its just standard plywood not OSB. I could always get a sheet of glass/plexiglass or even tile for the bottom and have the UTH under one end

I have a wooden viv and I've sealed the floor and sides with three coats of polyurathane varnish (the sort you use to seal wooden floors). It will never be completely waterproof and will occasionally need sanding down and re-varnishing. However, I've kept my old viv going for years like that and there are no signs of damage from damp so far.

Remember to let the varnish dry and air very well before using the viv, so that the potentially toxic fumes are completely gone.

I have the UTH inside the viv, covered with ceramic floor tiles with extra shielding over the point where the wire goes into the mat (the place most susceptible to being pooped on!).
