i am receiving a rescue today i realize that this is mostly and is about corn snakes but i have am getting a rescued bp someone left a rat in its tank over night. and the rat ate the tail off the bp. i have had bps before but i never had to do extensive medical care like healing a tail that has been eaten off. can somone plz give me some information as to what i can do thank you very much. i don't know how bad it is but from what i heard there was a lot of blood i'm picking up today at 3.

And please take pictures so we can show people who "know better" why not to feed live.

oh and i would love to take pictures im a lil upset this was friend that did this and im always ranting about how not to do this she has always come to me about this stuff but this time.. grrrr the woundthe tail is missing right up to the vent theres like a centermiter or less left before the vent.. i have not idea if im supposed to wrap it sense its so close to the vent..

Until you get better advice, I'd put the snake on paper towels, clean the wound with antibacterial soap (like Dial) and then put on a light covering of triple antibiotic and just leave it uncovered. Will you be taking it to a vet? IDK if the vet would give it an antibiotic shot or not.

im did not thinking id be getting this snake its a last minute thing and i usuallu do a donation thing but no donations for the past 3 months.. and no money im trying to see if the owner will at least pay for the actuall visit.. i want to get it healed and into a new home..

Wow that's going to be a hard one with it being so close to the vent. I'd follow Nanci's advice but I really think it's going to need to see a vet ASAP. You don't know just how much damage has been done to nerves, muscle, etc. A centimeter from the vent worries me a lot.

Take it to a vet

Back in college, I had a boa that had 4 inches eaten to the bone from the tail to the vent. I took it to the vet to have it put down and she was nice enough to give me some pink drops to give the snake. A month later the entire tail had grown back and the snake began to eat on pre killed small rats (learned my lesson the hard way!)

I really cant give much advice on this, although my immediate reaction would be to take it to the vet as well.

I just feel so bad for that snake. I wish you the best with this and hope she makes a full recovery. Keep us updated.

I fixed your original statement for you. Live feeding isn't a concern if done properly.

Nanci's completely right. Sure, if your there and watching the whole time for each snake (and I know I never have time to do that), then maybe theres less of a chance something totally disastrous will happen, but there is still a significant chance that you really should not take!

hello guys sorry long day yesterday so i got the snake and and saw the poor thing and rushed it to the vet.. the snake is a female. the vet fixed her on up.. had to put in a few stiches to cover some bone but it was lucky it was pretty much clean even bites..she looks funny right know the doc wanted it covered so they kinda casted it sorda..i got her some pain killers.. and there is no permint damage to the vent.. and if ever she was bred shed be ok... but i will not take that chance ever! she will be adopted out as soon as shes is compltly healed...oh and the pisser i got her to eat a prekilled large mouse.. no problem. that idot was feeding live for no reason!

Um... it's always a risk, even if you are sitting there watching. What happens when the snake strikes and coils improperly and the mouse bites and punctures their eye?

Congrats sounds like great news!!! I am glad the snake took a prekilled item and you actually know how ignorant it is to chance feeding live if you don't have too. Even standing right over the snakes tank it only takes a second for the rat or mouse to bite the snake which can cause infection and obviously in your case serious injury.

I'm glad the vet was able to fix her up and the fact she ate for you after all that is wonderful. Hope she continues to do well.
