ok so in my dorm room I have had a small corn snake next to my computer since september and a bearded dragon in a 40 gallon breeder on my dresser also since september. Recently I received a corn snake that was about 3 feet long and is in a 20 Gallon Long. I have aspen bedding in the bottom, but recently my room started to smell pretty bad. I am a very clean person, and always clean their tanks. I never had a problem with the smell with the little corn, and bearded dragon. But since I had this new one for the last month or two my room smeels horrible. I dont have any friends over b/c I am embarrased how bad it smells. I cant cover the odder and its getting to the point i want to get rid of the 3 foot corn. He is sooooo friendly I take him out and put him up to my nose but he smells fine. I cant find out where the odor is coming from but untill I had this new one, it never smelled before. Any suggestions? I am always in my room working on my thesis, and am able to spot clean within an hour of them pooping usually. But I am to my wits end? Is he musking or something. None of the animals can see one another. I am oging to get rid of the aspen bedding and go with paper towels incase the bedding is holding odors in. And if i stick my nose over the big guys tank it doesnt smell. AHHHHHHHH someone help me. I am so stressed and i dont need this. Please help me before i throw the new snake out the window. I love him to death but i cant stand the smell of my room. I'm embarrased, please help.

What does it smell like, exactly? All pets smell to a degree, and my BD's feces smelled more than my corns ever do.

Have you checked the bedding thoroughly for a missed regurge in BOTH snake's cages? That'd smell like soured milk + rotten mouse. It's unmistakable. Even the smallest pinks can stink up an entire room.

I'd do a complete change of the aspen for your new snake, and see if that helps. While spot cleaning works great, after a couple of months the bedding will start to smell from missed pieces etc. You may sprinkle some baking soda on the bottom before adding the aspen back in. I know that helps with mouse odors.

It may also be a case of what you're feeding the adult snake. Some prey tends to cause more smelly poo than others. Maybe the stomach contents of your particular feeders is to blame. Try mice from another source and see if that helps.

The larger protein content in rats seems to cause more of an odor, mainly because I think the size of the poo is larger. Some people feed their snakes chicks, and chickens are known to have a high sulphur content which can produce some pretty noxious smelling poo.

Most snakes don't musk unless they're handled. Not to say they can't do it any other time, they just usually don't have any reason so.

And lastly, are you removing the spot-cleaned poos from your trashcan in the room? I once tossed a regurge in the trash once and forgot about it. Phew...I don't make that mistake anymore.

Don't despair. Get a plug in and invite friends over. =)

Then, like Taceas states, it not from your snake but from soured milk or rotten mouse. You need to move everything to find it. Not knowing the type of building you live in but could the smell be in the walls or ceilings?? What kind of building do you live in?? Musking and poop do stop smelling.

Good Luck

another possibility is that it as totally nothing to do with your pets & a bird has got in & died or something ??? just a thought!

Hi,
My snake will musk if there is something he does'nt like or if something scares him. The smell is awful. I've smelled a regurge but nothing compares to the musk smell. You have to clean everything out and bleach it to get rid of the smell. Hope this helps. :wavey:

Maybe put one cage in a friend's room or in the hallway for a couple of hours, to see if the odor goes away or can be isolated. Eliminate all the possibilities that way.

This is a bit :-offtopic, but

How are you fitting 40 and 20 gal vivs in your dorm room?!!
Do you have a single?

Hmm... maybe going to U of O (very small prison cell like dorm rooms) has skewed my perceptions of what dorm life is like.. Good luck if your RA decides to "investigate" the smell in your room though.. :sidestep:

Yea I am in a single dorm room, its pretty roomie. I have had pets all four years but never had a problem.

I have been feeding the big guy rat pups, but he seems like he could be taking bigger. I am going to switch both snakes back over to paper towels as a substrate, although I feel bad Doin that but ohwell.

Yes the bearded dragon poop always smells horrible, but I give him a bath everyday and he usually poops in the bath.

I'd put money on the smell coming from the bearded dragon . . . fresh dumps from them are horrid. Of course the recommendations to check for hidden regurges or dead mice is great too.

Have you ever cleaned the cages thoroughly (taken everything out, hosed them out, used bleach and possibly a weak detergent, etc.)? And yeah the Aspen is supposed to 'absorb' the odor, and I think you reach a point where it needs to be thrown out and replaced with some fresh Aspen, newspaper, or whatever. It definitely doesn't last forever, as far as the ability to neutralize or mask odors.

You got any practical joker type friends or people in your dorm? it may be possible that it has nothing to do with your pets...

Once me and a buddy placed pieces of deli sliced ham under the insoles of a passed out friends shoes. Took him about 4 days to figure it out. Another time we washed another passed out friends leather belt with cod liver oil. It took him about 2 weeks to discover where the oder was coming from...

just an idea. :shrugs:

Can we say eww?

Although I had a decent sized dorm room and the fortune that my roomate moved out after a month and left me to it alone, the dorm room had a bathroom that was shared with the room next door. Good thing right? Private toilet and sink.

The girls who happened to share it with me were atrocious. They left food to rot in the bathroom trashcan, cigarette ashes and butts in the sink, and half the time they never flushed after a bowel movement. The stench saturated everything in my room no matter how many towels I tried to use to seal the door up with, or how many air fresheners I had going.

:puke01:

Got to the point I finally had to take it up with the RA and dorm committee just to be able to live in my room.

actually those pranks are kind of funny, and i think i might be useing them on friends now.

Actually, I have been cleaning everything. I spent the entire day two days ago, with each tank, took all the aspen out, replaced with paper towels so i cant miss poops in the future. washed every item and the tanks themselves. The smell is better, but i also added air freshiners all over.

I honeslty think the smell is coming from the vent in my room. THe vent blows out 125 degree air ( i measured with a temp gun) and i think the air coming from that smells. It is right next to my wooden dresser and it might be a combination of the hot hot air against my wooden dresser. So maybe its actually not my snakes.

from the vent? id call your maintaince people. Sounds like you may have a dead <insert name of small animal here> stuck up there.
