ILOVECORNSNAKES

My lil Delilah!! ^^
Hi. There is a mom & pop type pet store in my town. It's like the only place to get live mice around here, without going out to the mall(which is alot of traffic and my mom won't drive me that far). Anyway, so I was in there a while back and they were taking horrible care of a rosy boa. It had generations of mice, and no water, and crap everywhere. I commented to the owner about it, and he said he'd fix it, I came back, and it wasn't fixed, I came back again, and it was gone. Okay, I was in there today, to get mice, and there was a very pretty corn in there. The cage however.... infuriated me. There was NO water, there wasn't even a DISH for water. There was poo EVERYWERE. And I belive it was in the wrong substrate, but I'm unsure about that. There was also incomplete sheds all over the place. The snake, fortunately, had no mites, and no left over sheds. I held it and it seems like a nice snake. It wasn't mean, it didn't try to bite me, but it was active. I don't know if its male or female, the guy didn't no either. Any one got any advice? I don't want to see this snake hurt... If it was up to me, I'd buy it like that, but... the snakes a hundred bucks, and I need a tank for it. I'm trying to convince my parents to let me get it, even if I sell it, which I may do, if I get it. I have the money to buy the tank and the snake myself. As for the hides and heating pad, I have enough money in the bank to cover it. It's not a morph I'm paretically intrusted in, so I'm probly going to sell it. I just can't stand to see it there. What should I do???

personally, i wouldnt buy the snake if i was just going to go and sell it right after i got it! what morph is it? if you were to buy it and sell it would you be able to get as much as you paid for it? I dont know what anybody else would do in your situation but i dont think its a very good idea.

Hope that helped.

Don't buy it. You'll realize you're not going to be able to save every snake by buying it, that's why you report him and quit buying stuff there. You might not agree with the conditions he keeps the animals in, but you still support him by giving him your money for other things. Have you thought of buying frozen mice online and just go the f/t route?

It's hard to see an animal suffer, but buying the poor thing won't solve the problem. The pet store owner will just replace it with a new snake and it will be kept in the same horrible conditions. Try to find someone to report him to.

I agree, report him and buy F/T online. Dont give him another dime of your money! And tell him you will tell everyone about the conditions he keeps his snakes in including whoever you are reporting it to!

Yep, I agree with everyone else. Even if you did turn around to sell it, do you have a potential buyer at $100? That would only cause you to break even. Unfortunately I have seen some grim conditions as well. I can only recommend that you report him and stop supporting the business :(

Agree'd.

Is there any possibility of taking a bus to the mall? Or getting your mom to drive you there for a 'big buy' of feeders so you don't have to go back there all that often? Your mother can hardly begrudge you a monthly trip to the mall, can she?

Forgot to add, that even if you're feeding 2 pinkies every 5-6 days (not sure exactly what you're feeding your snake, so I'm using what I feed mine as basis) buying like 20 or so should last you, estimated, 10 weeks.

There is no bus to the mall. This town is so dumb, we don't have ANY public trans. We don't even have taxi's. And I don't want to give them frozen, they don't take them well, I don't have the freezer space, and they really like the live. It is a good idea to buy a couple, but then I'd have to feed them, and my mom doesn't want rodents. She is just fine with reptiles, but she doesn't like rodents.

I'v realized I can't get this snake. :( Oh well. I hope he gets picked up by someone that'll take care of him. I wish I didn't have to buy from this guy though.

Considering that a live rodent could really hurt your snake, you should think about switching her over.
Most corns switch with very little trouble and it would solve your problem.

Would you be prepared to pay an expensive vet bill if your snake gets injured by its frightened desperate prey?

Unless the frozen mouse isn't warm enough, I've not found one snake that won't take f/t. I have 22 snakes not counting babies. Some of them were wildcaught imports...they all take f/t without hesitation. There should be no reason why you would care to risk your snake's life, eyes or nose by feeding live. I would report the owner to whatever passes for animal regulation or ASPCA in your town. Most of them will investigate poor conditions. Even a backward state like I live in (south carolina) says you need to provide food, shelter and WATER to an animal. What he's doing is illegal and animal cruelty. I would not give him your business.
