May be Het stripe het bloodred. Ill try to Get some pictures of it. My Okee has Stripe on each side where sattles are supposed to be, and then the stripe tapers off and sattles start appering and thats where the checkers start dissapearing and red spots start in place of the black.
 
What you are describing sounds normal.

Some okeetees have red checks on their bellies, also the striping you speak of is also a normal trait but many breeders try to get rid of it. If you find a wild cornsnake, it usually has these stripes on it.
