im a newbie with a few questions

Hi all you snake lovers.....
I just bought my first corn snake and would like to know how i can find out the sex of my corn,it is about 2 months old..
Are these snakes better living alone or do they like to have company from other corns?
How often can they be handeled for cos if left to me i would be playing with it for hours at a time but i expect maybe short periods because of the temp..
thanks for your time.....:)

if the snake is new then you should try leave it for a while before handling it. for a start Handel it for around 10 mins then put it back and the next day Handel for 15 mins. do this over a period of weeks. as for housing together i wouldn't recommend it people have done it successfully so it can be done. but in some cases 1 corn can eat the other and it could result in early pregnancy.

um the sex can be determind by a probe this can be done at some vets and some reptile shops don't do it yourself.

remember its Yong only feed it 2 pinks a week i feed my corns every 7 days on a Friday. after feeding try not to Handel them till the bolge in there stomach has gone down.

thats basically it theres a lot more info that others can give you I'm sure. the info i have just given you has come from some members on this forum and a few books.

oh yeah housing corns together could result in them getting hy, scared, nevous this can cause the snake not to eat.

hope this info helps.

Hi! Nice to see another new face. ;) I just got my first corn in June. :)
Well, as for sexing, you can have your snake probed (altho I hear you don't want to do this too young-- not sure how young is too young) or you can have hatchlings popped. A vet or breeder should be able to do this for you.
As for housing together, most people would not recommend it (and I agree) altho as Bubbles stated some people have managed it successful. You should do a search of the forums for "housing together" and "cannibalism". Those threads would be good reading if you are thinking about housing snakes together- they'll give loads of good info about the subject so you can make an informed decision.
And I will let other more experienced memebers give any more in-depth advice. :)
Have you posted any pics of your little one? I'm sure we'd all love to see! ;)

Congrats and welcome. :wavey:
I would not recommend housing snakes together (except at breeding time) from personal experience.

If you just got your snake give it at least 4 days (preferably a week) to settle in and DE-stress some before you handle it. Short handlings are best at first but your snake will let you know when it has had enough.

I would NOT recommend getting a hatchling probed to determine the sex (if it is a hatchling). Popping is a much better way to determine the sex of such small snakes. If you cannot find an experienced person to pop it then unless you intend to breed and are looking for a mate now, then I wouldn't stress about the sex (if it is a pet only, then it doesn't really matter), of course, we are all curious and that is valid enough reason I suppose. lol

(my spell check works)

thanks

Many thanks for the replies,no doubt ill be popping in from time to time with questions :)
i will only have the snake for a pet,not to breed,i think there is enough unwanted animals around..
Im pretty sure ive got the basics, and from what ive read on these forums i chose a good breed of snake,eg:easy to care for and no real probs with biting.
ive not seen anything about this snake constricting,so would assume it will be safe in the future to let it roam around my head and so on. There many differant sorts of corns i see,
Mine is very simmilar to the one in the pics above except in between the maroon colors it has orange spots..anyone any ideas what sort of corn it might be?
Do the colors and markings change much as they get older?
I think snakes are cool
thanks all

if the snake looks like this little fella then its a normal dude
