im having troubles with the temp

alright i cnat seem to get this right and ive had my ball and corn for 2 days now and i want them to be all set.

i plugged in uth mats and once they warmed up the tanks were around 100F which is obviously way too much. I turned off the pads until i could find a solution and i turned on my heat lamp. They heat lamp seems to keep them low 80's and i would like them to be more mid to high 80's. I bought 2 rheostats(didnt know i could plug two matts in one) and hooked one up with both matts. I let it run for a good 5 to 6 hours(package says itll take 6 hours to get up to heat for the pads) and nothing... the tank was 74 which was pretty much room temperature. I reached in the tank dug under the bedding a little and touched the glass where the matt was and no heat at all(when it was up to 100 i could feel the heat on the glass).... i made sure the rheostat was set to high not low just so it could warm up. I tried the other one yesterday and still got nothing.

is it possible that they dont work? is there a certain brand i should look for?

will my snakes be harmed by having slightly varying temps for the first couple days?... i really dont want to stress them out as ive had bad luck with my past 2 snakes im really hoping these go well.

any advice you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated... also the ball python hasnt gone in his hide once in the two days ive had him.

I know very little, but in your situation i would use the lamps (they are a steady temp, right?) untill you can get the uth and rheostats figured out...i dont know if you have a tank without a snake in it that you could 'play' with without stressing your animals...other than that...perhaps try using one heater per rheostat (since you have two anyway) other than that...you'll need someone with more experiance than me.

Are the two rheostats that you picked up the same and have you tried both? Also, were you measuring the temperature with a probe thermometer directly above the UTHs? Your substrate will absorb a lot of heat and the ambient temperature will not and doesn't need to be as warm as the surface area that your corn snake is on (not familiar with BP husbandry). I've been using a Zoo Med Repti Temp Rheostat to regulate my two vivs and have found that I need to keep it at low or between low and medium to get my UTHs around 80-85.

they were both the same thing and i returned them and bought a different brand one and it works fine now... also i use a probe to check the temp and i have it right on the glass where the pad is... not on top of the substrate, should i put it on top?

I have kept corns for over 20 years. I maintain temps between 78 -82 degrees. I have never had a problem with sheds, digestion, breeding or incubating eggs in that range. I do not use uth or lamps. I just use an oil filled heater to maintain that temp range in the room. Many days, room temps are ok without the heater. Find the easiest way to mantain that range and you will be ok. temps above 82 are not needed. Just my opinion, it has worked well for me. ;)
