I'm really worried about my pastel ball python...any opinion/advice is welcome...

Logan256

Dabbling since 2003.
Today is feeding day for all of my boids, and as I went to feed my pastel ball I noticed that his skin looked very...rough...

I pulled him out of the tank, and upon closer inspection I saw that it looks as though some of his scales have actually...shriveled in places, and there are some tiny wounds on him, like he has really rough dry skin...but I keep his enclosure reasonably humid, and he just shed about 2 weeks ago, so I know it's not a shed related issue...:shrugs:

I'm taking him to the vet on Monday, but Monday seems so far away! :(

Anybody ever have a problem like this before? Any opinions/advice are welcome!

Thanks,
Logan

My ball had scales like this for a bit too.
I bought a plastic shoe box, filled it with water and left it in his viv. Once he discovered it, he stayed inside it for at least 2 days straight.
I inspected him many times after that and the "shriveled" scales became normal looking again.
So over all- my guess is that he is a little too dry in there.

Good luck with him!

I am quite sure the only problem you have there could be humidity. It is also possible it could be a preshed.

Thanks everyone, I'm really hoping that it's only a humidity problem, so I've given him a huge water bowl and upped the humidity by misting twice a day...I missed taking him to the vet today but I'm taking him tomorrow, because part of me is scared to death that it may be some sort of contagious skin infection/disease...it just showed up so suddenly...am I over-reacting by taking him to the vet? I've just never had a problem like this before? :shrugs:

Having just spent more than I want to think about at my vet for two snakes, I'd say that if you're really concerned, it's worth the peace of mind for the cost of a visit.

Update:

The vet said he had a mild non-contagious staph infection, that had already begun healing itself before I took him in. The vet said it probably started between his "shed" skin and the new layer underneath when shedding took a bit too long-it let bacteria build.
He told me to keep an eye on it, and as long as he continues to improve, not to worry at all.

Thanks everyone,
Logan
