Well with a busy summer schedule and many vacations, I did not have as much time as I had planned for my snakes. The rat snakes weren't interested in breeding so after a few tries I decided to wait until next. I bred my two amel het butter mots again and got about 8 eggs all of which looked bad. One or two had potential but I left them all in until the infertile ones became moldy. I was left with one fairly good egg and the other day it began to pip. After over 24 hours it emerged!

Now it looks small to me but that might be because I havent seen day old babies in a long time. It also has some of the yolk stuff still attached. I have seen this on other threads so it doesn't look to be uncommon. I guess it will absorb the rest or it will fall off! The baby had many pieces of the hatch rite on it so I let him sit in some water for a few seconds to get the majority off. I just dont want to pick it off of him.

So here is what looks to be a baby amel motley! It also has a very visible vein on the side which can be seen in the pictures. Again I think its normal but I have forgotten what brand new babies look like! ;)

Thanks for looking!

Lovely little baby! I wouldn't worry about the vein that you see, but I would be concerned about the "yolk" thing attached as that is not where the umbilicus attaches to the yolk. That has to be something else, but I just can't tell what from the photos. It looks to be attached in two places.

It almost looks like the hemipenes are popped out and attached to his side. Is the vent clear? I am certainly not an expert but I would get that checked out!

Thanks for your help guys!

Yea its not at the cloaca but about a half an inch about it. I got two okay shots. The stuff hanging out looks pretty dry now. The snake doesn't seem to be hurting as far as I can tell. Any suggestions? Could this come off by itself?

I'd clip it near the source but not TOO close....the more you leave on there the more it'll drag and possibly pull on the area near the belly which may take longer to heal. However, if you clip it too close then you'll leave an opening on the belly and that would be bad too. I've probably complicated things....good luck! ;)

No thats a big help! I will clip it leaving just a little bit and maybe it will eventually fall off or go back in. Then in a few days when it shed we will see what happens.

Ok so its been cut and he didn't even flinch so I am hoping he didn't need it whatever it was. Could it have been the umbilical cord?

Now there is just a tiny portion coming out from it. I hope it comes off when he sheds. If not, will I need to take him to the vet? There are a few fat spots in his body like you see after a baby snake would eat. Anything to be concerned about?

I feel so stupid not knowing anything about this. :awcrap:

Thanks though!

Those fat spots are hopefully yoke...but it could also be an infection. Keep an eye on them...if they get larger that is bad. If they get smaller, that is good.

Looks like he / she definitely emerged from the egg a bit early (maybe 24 hrs or so).

Let us know how it does. I agree with Jeff, I think the overly plump body shape indicates yolk still to be absorbed. I had a hatchling this year that had exactly the same very fat body shape. It was the first of the clutch to emerge. It slimmed down over the course of a few days to a normal hatchling shape.

Yea, because he was the only hatchling its hard to tell if it was early but it seems he was. Hopefully he does slim down and turns out fine. The real test is shedding and eating!

I will keep you updated on his condition!

Update!

Good news! Carmen shed over the weekend and the little piece of umbilical cord that was left on there has fallen off. She also ate over night and is on the right track to becoming a healthy baby!

I am going to take pictures soon and post them.

Very cool! One of my babies last year came out with some of that stuff stuck on him, and is my best feeder, and also the one that looks the biggest! He's also the one that likes to bite. LOL. But seriously, very cool! That's a great looking little baby.

Congrats Dave! Sounds like things are looking up for your lil baby! Keep us posted. We have had a few that had the umbilical material still there too. Most do great and it is absorbed without any issues. We did have two over the past 4 years that just didnt make it, probably for a reason not just because of the cord hanging out.

PJ :wavey:

Gratz dude, One of my li'l ones i had this year had an open belly and i just pushed in the guts and used new skin and shes doing just fine. Not even a scar left
