Incubation Question

I am incubating a small clutch (5 eggs) in a havo-bator. The eggs are in damp moss in a zip-lock container. I do have holes punched in the side but I have not kept a lid on it. The eggs should begin hatching in 1-2 weeks. Should I put a lid on the container before the eggs hatch? The container is one of the small square ones and with eggs and moss, there is not a whole lot of room left. I could take the top layer of moss off the eggs to give room for the babies. Not sure what to do as this is my first time at hatching snakes.

I'm not familiar with how a havo-bator is set up, but if you're concerned about keeping the hatchlings in a confined space, then go ahead and put the lid on the zip-lock container. Believe it or not, there is pleny of room in your container (unless the moss is EXTREMELY packed) for the hatchlings...they seem to prefer to crawl through the moss than to sit on top (with a few exceptions of coarse).

I also use a hovabator and small tuperware/ziplock containers only I use perlite as a medium. I always leave the cover on my containers throughout the incubation period and NO holes in the container. There is no need to add moisture to the container during the incubation time this way, I do open the containers just to check them once a week.
As for covering them while they hatch, I check mine everyday when the hatch day is a couple days away and as soon as I see one pipping I leave the cover off to give the babies plenty of room to get out. AS LONG as you make sure your hovabator lid is on correctly and firmly, the babies cannot get out of it and they will go down and lay on the bottom of the incubator. I just collect them from there. But you have to do what you feel is best for your situation.
Best of luck with your clutch!
