infertile egg???

Good day to ALL.

I was wondering why does a snake get infertile eggs and slugs?
I wanted to get myself a charcoal motley double het for amel. She is about 1.5m and 4years old. She belongs to my friend. He wanted her to lay eggs before I could take her. Now She was now mated to an amel het for anery, for trying to breed out a blizzard. Well she was gravid.

But when it came to producing eggs. All where infertile! I was hoping to get a blizzard baby too but agggg well. Now I'm wondering why does this happen? Does the female need something in her dieet like multi vitamens?? Calcuim she got once every 2weeks.

Please any advice?
Thanks.

There could be a few reasons the breeding didn't take.

The snakes didn't actually mate. You don't know unless you saw the male hemipene inside the female, and then a small spot of yellow semen on the newspaper, afterwards.

The snakes mated, but the male was infertile. (Too young, kept too hot so sperm are not viable, doesn't have enough sperm cells, sperm cells are deformed, etc.)

The snakes mated, but it was too early or too late in the cycle for the ova to be fertilized.

If your friend breeds her again next season I would suggest keeping her separate from the male. Put them together once a week, early in the breeding season, until the female allows the male to mate. Then put them together every three days until the female does not allow him to mate, twice in a row. Most males will still breed when they are blue, so don't skip an attempt just because the male is blue. So a total of 3-6 breedings. They only need to be put together for at most an hour- if she wants to breed it will generally happen in the first 15 minutes. Keep the male no warmer than 75-78F in the months leading up to the breeding season.

If she doesn't produce fertile eggs, use a different male the next season.

If he's good with a microscope, he can look at the semen and see if the sperm is alive, and in sufficient numbers. I have not been able to do this myself- I can't prepare the slide correctly, or something. But it's very possible.

Thanks a lot. But lucky for her I'm picking her up on Friday. Ill keep her separated till next season. I've got an amel male ill try next season. (Maybe)

So the problem is like 90% male? Or no proper breeding?
I was hoping that. I thought the problem is the female. She just needs too go through a cooling period then its ok.

Well thanks a lot. Ill do more reading.
Any good site?

You know, I live in Florida, and it just doesn't get cool enough to brumate here without using air conditioning. My snakes do just fine without brumation, in terms of fertility.

Thanks. Here in south africa it gets quite cold sometimes. So it will help with brumation.
I was just thinking not that I want to breed now, that maybe something was wrong with the female.
Glad its like you said n mating error from "someone" who doesn't know jack.
As long as the female is ok. I would like to hatch my own eggs and see baby's coming out! Must be amazing.

Well till then ill just be broadening my understanding and knowledge. Lol.

Thanks for the info.
(Didn't think any one would help, being I'm a newbie.)

The newbies are who need help the most! I have a bunch of stickies down in my personal forum on this site, about breeding, preparing the lay box, etc.

Something odds going on with the female. She is pulling something from her rear after she laid eggs its been a few days. I will try up load images or else ill have to email. I need help. I don't have a reptile vet close to me. If there is someone in gauteng on this forum please send me a vets number for reps.

What could it be? Do snakes have like an afterbirth that also comes out?

Please!!!!!!

It's so hard to say anything without pictures. I've never seen any sort of afterbirth with snakes.

She could have a prolapsed oviduct. I would soak her in a heavy solution of sugar water- this will reduce the swelling. Unfortunately, I don't see how you're going to be able to save her without a vet. Is there possibly a bird vet that can help you, if you can't find a reptile vet? Keep her on damp paper towels until you can get care for her. I don't even know what to advise if you can't find a vet. Pics will help.

I'm loading images but doesn't seem to show in my post.

That is not good.
It definitely appears to be a prolapse, and unfortunately it is already really dark in color.
I would go ahead and do that sugar water soak, but you need to find a vet immediately.

That looks very bad. I don't really see how you can fix this yourself without a vet's help. TRY to beg a bird vet into seeing you, or even a small animal vet. Get her into a clean container after the soak.

If you can't locate a vet, you're going to have to either attempt to fix it, or euthanize her. Realistically, the only humane way to euthanize her (without a vet and drugs) is a crushing blow to the head which destroys her brain instantly. There is no other way. Cooling and freezing, while easier on you because out of sight, out of mind, is prolonged torture for her. Cold is a major stress of reptiles. Gassing reptiles is also not effective because they breathe so infrequently. I'm sorry to put it so bluntly, but without a vet, you have to be strong and do what needs to be done.

Otherwise I guess you can soak her, clean things off, see if you can find the opening to her vent, see if you can find an egg in that tissue, see if you can remove it- but I still don't think you will be able to replace the tissue back inside her, and as noted, the prolapsed tissue is already dark, indicating a reduced blood supply and most likely tissue death.

Really this snake's only hope is to find a vet, quickly. I'm sorry; I know this must really suck for you, and her.

I spoke to him. He said he will take her to the petshop close to their house. If he doesn't I will take her to my vet. He doesn't usually help reptiles. But he will help. Soo I hope something can be arranged. Oooohhh I don't like stuff like this.

I'm hart broken for the poor thing.
