infertile mice

Camille

Herper Wife
hey i just bought 3 sub-adult mice to feed and i hear somewhere that most mice bought in pet shops are infertile due to excess inbreeding. is that true? i went thrue ALOT to get my mom to accept and get a cage that my snake cant get into(a tank with a metal snap on snake top). I really need feeders :p i could get rats from a guy i know but my mom does NOT want me to get rats

All mice breed, just some do better at it then others. Fancy mice may have smaller litters than white lab mice. Lab mice were breed to have larger litters and fancy mice were breed for there looks so litter number did not count.

In some cases you can find infertile mice. But even if their inbreed they can reproduce. It's just easier if your breeding into other mice who are preferably not in thet bloodline. I found after i got 2 mice from the petstore and one of my females (who was already pregnant when I bought her) it would be some what easier if I traded the Vet 2 males for 2 new females from different bloodlines. that way I had variety in the colony.

In 15 years I have NEVER had an infertile mouse... not one! Thats 0 infertile in... oh... over 10,000 approximately... would have to get the ledger out for exact numbers. I've also had litters 25+ from fancy mice, which far exceeds my largest "lab mouse" litter of 17. In my experience its the care the mouse receives that causes litter size changes or "infertile" periods. AKA if the store you get them from sucks, they might not breed well and may produce small litters. Also, if a mouse is physically incapable of breeding, for a genetic or health reasons, she will NOT go into estrous, only healthy mice will go into estrous. So if you aren't seeing the signs of estrous (easiest to see is mucous clumps on the bedding) then chances are there is something wrong with your mouse, or it is simply not old enough yet. =) Certain breeds of mice cannot breed until they are almost 3 years old, others breed at 4 months.

alright thanks :) just wanted to make shure. MY mice were live feeders bought from the pet shop they might not be the best for breeding but i'll wait and see. I really want to breed rats but i have to wait till i move out for that(next summer)

My first 100 mice were bought as "feeders" and I have 1000s now, have bred and sold over 10,000 babies hehe... *proud mousey momma*

:p i find their cute to watch scury about. Ive seen the male try to cover the females already so i should have some in not too long. hope so too since im running out of food

about that-

I do plan on breeding up my own mouse clutch for feeding, but i've had mice before and know a bit about them. I hope that after your females are bred (with a male in there already im sure they have) I would remove the male- look up some mice links on male mouse introduction if you dont want him to be terribly lonely- but if the females have their babies with the male, he will do two things- be a good daddy and impregnate the females again. It's not healthy to let the girlies be brewing another batch while nursing a current brood. Some i suppose may not care about feeder health, but if you want your Breeders to be healthy, i wouldnt breed again until about a week or so after the first batch are gone (aka weaned or if used as pinkies).
Not a rant- just a health tip.

Um not to sound rude. Butt for a really healthy mice and some who do breed Fancy mice. I know I used to wait till after my mice were weaned before breeding again. If its back to back it can sometimes cause shorter lifespans in mice. But thats what I've read and experienced.
