Is Everyone's Hunger Strike Over?

Guadalupe

Cause mine's not. I don't even know if that's what it is, but it sure seems like it...

Guadalupe stopped eating about three and a half weeks ago. Usually, she eats a small rat every 10-14 days or so, but she's decided she's not interested in food. I've tried 2 times in the past 3 weeks because I don't want her to develop a bad reaction to feeding. I even went down to adult mice, just in case she would eat something smaller. She seems to be acting fine, spending all her time trying to get out of her home as usual, and nothing's changed with her temps. I was thinking she might be a boy, and that's the problems, but everyone else's males seem to have quit their hunger strikes. ("She's" about 4 years old, so plenty old enough to be sexually mature). I called the vet, and she basically reviewed proper husbandry issues with me, as usual, but didn't seem to be a help over the phone. Should I take her in to the vet at some point? How long is too long with no food?

My male Big Jake is still going back and forth. I know I told you in another thread that Cherry went off feedings for a couple weeks, then laid a batch of slugs. She is now eating ravenously. So Guad could be carrying slugs, which she may lay or she may reabsorb. She's the right age. She would not have ever had to have contacted a male to do that. A healthy adult corn can easily go three to four months without eating. Keep an eye on her weight just so you can reassure yourself that she isn't wasting away. I'd start offering her a meal every other time- if she won't eat, skip the next feeding. Also, I'd forget adult mice and offer a single fuzzy or rat pink.

Thanks for the reassurance. I was feeling ok about everything, and then I tortured myself by reading old posts from people who's non-eating snakes died. (I would not be functional if she died...)

Anyways, I tried to see if she had eggs, but my untrained hands couldn't tell. I think she is going to shed (relatively) soon, so we'll see what happens.

Where can I get a good scale? She's outgrown her baby one, as I haven't had to weigh her in a while.

I still have one male totally refusing. Ny other male that was on a hunger strike ate a hopper I offered to him last night, so hopefully he is getting his appetite back.

My adult male finally went off hunger strike with a fresh killed adult mouse. He is still acting a bit bonkers in his tank though.

My Upper Keys male is on an on and off again feeding strike still and is constantly NON STOP cruising around his tank. I hope he gets over this soon cause he is driving me insane.

I have a male who hasn't eaten since JANUARY 30th! That's 108 days ago!

He actually just shed today... so I'm going to try to feed him tonight. He's lost a bit of weight, obviously. I'm certain that he'll eat soon though.

This has been his longest hunger strike ever. He's an 04.

One week, it seems to be over, then the next it isn't. Hopefully last week, is the last week, I had to deal with it!

He stopped eating in November, then he started, then stopped, then started and then he stopped again.

I need some Ibuprofen now!!

On again, off again here. IMO breeding season isn't over, in the sense that they can still breed again for a second clutch, so I don't really expect my males to start eating regularly for a while still.

My corns don't get brumated and the males never stop eating. Connection? I dunno. I know I have a male bp that hasn't eaten since last november and I am worried!

Fonchinette (non-brumated, otherwise healthy) '08 female hypo stripe has driven me from not concerned to annoyed to concerned over the last month.

Guadalupe, this is a link to an answer I gave some time ago. I would "assist" feed only as a last resort. I did not, at first, realize your original post ended with a question.
More senior members might tell you how it's properly done these days...if the time comes...but I'm sure we'd all agree it hasn't. By a long shot.
Thirty years ago, I just did my best. Which IMHO was pretty good.

My corns/kings/hoggy aren't brumated, and all males of appropriate age go on hunger strike.

This is the first year my guy's gone on a hunger strike, he used to be a reliable eater, never refused food once, not even in blue. And then breeding season this year came along, and he's having none of these food games. He ate once about two months ago, but has refused since, I'm not too worried about him- he's not losing weight, and is in blue now, maybe he'll eat next week?

As for my other snakes, Calypso refused once and never again, Ira has refused a couple times, but ate today for me, and my ghosty girl, Fea, only refused while gravid.

They'll come around, you just gotta wait it out, as stressful as that can be.
