Is he getting ready to shed?

We have had our corn snake for a little over 2 weeks now. Yesterday I noticed that his eyes are cloudy. He is a dark color so i can't tell if he has gone blue or not. He regurgitated his food on Sunday so I was going to feed him today. Is he getting ready to shed? if so , should i try to feed him? He is only 5 months old so he is still a baby.

if his eyes are cloudy then yes he is in shed, if he regurged sunday i would wait til he finishes shedding before trying to feed again.

no it won't hurt him to go that long without food, he should be done shedding in a few more days, his eyes will clear up for 1-5 days then you will see the shed laying around.

You'll know if a dark one has gone blue.... for example here is my Granite, Michael, from Monday night.... Definitely blue :D The red versions are a little harder to tell sometimes.

Also, please, please, do a search and in depth study of regurging here on the boards. It's much, much too soon to feed a baby that regurged. Those delicate stomach muscles need time to recover from the trauma :(

Please read the advice on dealing with regurges in the FAQ on the health section. Most accepted practise is a 10 day fast (water only) which allows the snake's oesophagus to heal and gut flora to recover. Repeated regurging can kill a young snake.

Really? The vet said not to go that long without feeding him. He said that it would b e fine to feed him today-granted this is before he went blue. Hmmmm

so when you say your snake has gone blue, you just mean the eyes? if that's the case, he went blue yesterday and his eyes are starting to clear up some today. i asked the vet about waiting 10 days to feed him after the regurg and the vet said not to go that long. He said it would be fine to feed him today. This is before he went blue though so now I'm not sure.

The eyes go blue, the colours will fade somewhat, although I don't really see that on my anery or charcoal based corns, more on my orange- based ones.

You, of course, are welcome to listen to your vet, but just how much snake experience does he/she/it really have???? Most vets have next to none. Personally, I would listen to Kathy Love (do a search)... she wrote the book (literally - two in fact) on keeping corns and that's who I chose to listen too. Although I am lucky to have a vet available, who bred corns & boas to put himself through vet school, she's still the one I go to first. My little Sunglow, who only weighs 8grams, had a regurge recently. I waited the 10 days as advised He ate like a champ and it stayed down. And that's what's most important. They start a regurge cycle and you can almost write the poor thing off. We have a few success stories on here, but most people lose them.

But its your snake, its fate is in your hands. Do as you will.

I hate to tell you this.... considering what you may do with it... but most snakes (although not all) will eat during their blue stage. Michael finished off a nice, dark weaned mouse after I snapped those pictures.

that's a good point. i don't know how much experience my vet has with snakes. maybe i will wait the 10 days just to be safe.

I promise you that your little one won't waste away on you :) Gunn has weighed 8g since Dec...sigh... he's getting longer (even that slowly), but not putting any weight on. At least he's not losing it either... that's most important. As long as he eats regular meals and it stays down... that's all I'm asking for right now :)

Your baby wont wither away. My baby corn went over a month without eating and he didn't loose too much weight.

Since your snake regurged, wait 10 days to feed him again. Then when you do feed him, feed him a smaller meal then normal. If he eats fuzzies, feed him a pinkie. If you are feeding him pinkies, just cut the head off a F/T pinkie and feed him that.
