Is he too small?

Hey everyone,

I finally measured my male corn, he's about 22 inches long. The thing is, he's supposed to be like a year old. I got him from a friend who had him for 4 months and was going to trade him for another corn, just because he looked too similar to another one she had. She's big on trading snakes after keeping them for a short period. :(

Do you guys think he's too small? If so...is their anything I can do to bulk him up? I just feel bad :( I'd hate to think it was something that I did, but really...I've only had him 4 or 5 months. He's definitely grown since I first got him, he has shed 4 times.

Any input would be appreciated...thanks :)

He seems like an alright size for a yearling (mabey a little small for a yearling). It sounds likehe is growing ok since he has shed 4 times in 4-5 months.

What size mice are you feeding him???

Cheers

Per recommendation, I was feeding him 2-3 large pinkies/small fuzzies a week. Some people on here told me to go ahead and move up to full fuzzies, and I am planning on doing that when I run out. Since I still have more pinkies to go, I have been using Rep-Cal and Herptivite on them...

Do you feel that is sufficient until I can get larger mice?

Oh and corndude, he's not skinny at all. That's why I wasn't too worried about prey size or parasite

Sounds fine to me, Size is often due to the ackgroung I.E: parentage of the corn as I have a corn which came from small parents and was only 23" at one y/o but I have another corn born a year after the previous one that was an astounding 35" at a year old! He came from a larger father and a good sized mother he is now a year and half old and 40" while the other is still only 37" and 2 and half years old but there are times when this is false also I wouldnt be surprised if that corn was a late '02 hatchling and may have come from smaller parents but as long as it look/acts healthy I would really not worry about size.

Rule of Thumb: baby snakes double their length in the first year. As neonate corns are in the 10-13 inch range, I'd say your snake's length was within expected range for a year old.

I'm more worried about the Rep-Cal and Herpetovite. Do either of these contain calcium? If so, I'd cut out whichever it is. Even pinky mouse bones have the correct calcium to phosphorus ratio. Adding extra calcium, and throwing the ratio off, can do more harm than good. Good luck.

rep-cal is a calcium supplement. It gets so confusing at times! I've been told contradicting info from "breeders" so many times, LOL. Since I do not have too many pinkies left, I will probably just stick with the herptivite (reptile multi-vitamin) for now until the fuzzy stage. Thanks for the help you guys, it is so important to get things right at this age! :)

I'm fairly new to all this myself, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I would have thought that feeding pinkies to a 22 inch, not skinny yearling was far too small a prey size. Pinkies are not that high in nutrients, and you should be feeding your snake prey that is about 1.5 times the size as the widest part of it's body. My advice would be for the sake of wasting a few dollars, ditch the pinkies and move up to the right size food immediately.

Yeah, I agree with Bluetattoo.

Pinkies are way to small for 22inch corn. Ditch the pinkies and feed your corn 1-2 fuzzies a week. Start off with 1 fuzzie for the first month then you COULD move your corn onto 2 fuzzies.

How many pinkies do you have left???

Cheers

Alex

I have about 20 to 30 pinkies left. I had gotten them from a reptile show a little while ago, so that is why I have so many.

I realize that the prey is too small for his size (again, misinformation from a so called breeder) , but I was told by some people on this board that it will be okay to finish these out if I fed 3-4 pinkies a week.

I suppose I will just end the headache and ditch the pinkies ;)

Wanna...there is no need to ditch the pinkies. It will not hurt your snake to feed them to him. Yes...your snake may not grow quite as fast during the next few weeks, but that is NOT harmful to it. Don't waste you money by throwing away perfectly good pinkies. I do have another suggestion, though. You could go ahead and buy some fuzzies and feed 1-2 fuzzies and 1 pinky each feeding. That way you will use the pinks up, but also be feeding some fuzzies.

Okay, thanks :)

Agreed.

Weve been feeding ours one fuzzy and one pinkie for the last few weeks to use our pinky supply up. Theyre now on 2 fuzzies a week each.

I'll agree throwing in a pinky as a side dish to a large fuzzy would save wasting the pinkies , but I still think feeding a 22 inch yearling pinkies alone ain't doing your snake any favours.
