Hi everyone,

My late clutch had it's first pip early hours yesturday morning. When my husband noticed it at 4am it had it's head out and that was the same at 8:30am, 6:30pm (was at work all day) and at 11pm last night but i went to them this morning and it had gone back into the egg. I've heard of this happening if they get disturbed but I wasn't about enough to hassle them too much, two others have pipped but what should I do about the first guy? I was so excited to see him, now i feel devastated!

Don't worry! My clutch last year had babies popping their heads in and out constantly. It took 'em well over a day to fully come out.

So when yours went back in, how long did they stay in for at a time? All i can see is the slit and it hasn't changed since 7am this morning and its 2pm now (in england). It pipped well over 24hrs ago, is it likely to have emerged fully and buried itself under the other eggs or vermiculite?

They would stay in for hours at a time. But every now and then, I could walk by and see a little head poking out and then draw back in. It very well could have emerged fully and buried. Take a flashlight and VERY GENTLY press it up against the egg to see if he's still in there. Or, if you can, try and open the slit a little further and see if you can see inside the egg.

Or, if you have your eggs separated, you can very carefully lift it without rotating to see if it feels almost weightless. Then you begin your search! haha.

Thanks for you help- I thought about perhaps trying to open the slit to see anything but one of the others that has pipped is stuck to it and I didn't want that one to be scared back in by me fiddling with the other one (is that likely to happen???) Oh dear, i really hope he's ok........wherever he is.

If you don't want to scare them, then wait until the other one has fully emerged.

You're welcome! Glad everything turned out alright for you! Hatchlings can be tricky when they wanna be. LOL.

Glad it worked out for you!

Just for general information for anyone waiting for their first clutch to hatch:

By leaving them alone when they seem to be taking too long to hatch, you are not endangering them. I have found (in corns, anyway), that carefully slitting the egg when most of the others have hatched doesn't cause problems, and can occasionally liberate a baby unable to slit for itself. HOWEVER- if it is not able to get out of the egg once slit, it usually has some sort of congenital problem and will not be able to survive, no matter what you do. So "helping" (or scaring) it out prematurely can only cause harm (by not allowing time to fully absorb the egg yolk), and no benefit.

So, as difficult as it is sometimes, patience usually yields the best rewards!

Good luck on your new babies!

Thanks! It's even got abit of substrate on top of it's head to prove it's been burrowing!! It's gone back again now, it obviously likes it there!

Haha, so cute! Super-Congrats on your clutch!

Do you have their containers ready? I couldn't find the round ones in the stores but I found a restaurant supply store and bought square containers, popped holes into them, and placed all of the babies in those. (Along with a water dish, moist hide, and a paper towel.) It seems to be working out great so I thought I'd give you a tip ^_^.

Do you have their containers ready? .

Hi yes, I've had my "hatchling centre" as we call it, ready for what seems like a lifetime!! Me and my husband built it and it's all ready for them. Two have fully emerged now and a third is just chillin in it's egg!! but no more slits yet and its been over 48hrs over since the first one.

Yeah, sometimes the little buggers take their sweet time just to taunt us. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told that you wait one week after the first pip to begin slitting, so you are fine so far.
